We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
My organizational skills truly helps me to succeed. Without it I’d get off track and lose focus on the tasks I have to complete. Everything and everyone has a place.
Integrity is a habit. It guides how and what I communicate. Integrity speaks to the core of who I am.
Showing up is another habit. By showing up I mean I am present with my clients, my family and friends. I give them my most authentic self.
Asking difficult questions is a habit for me. It forces me and others to dig deep and get to the root of things, good and bad.
What should our readers know about your business?
Spirit Filled Creations LLC (SFC) is a publishing company that walks through the publishing process with authors by delivering a proven pathway to share their ideas and tell stories in a way that unites and celebrates their uniqueness. We are most proud of the fact that our authors become successful entrepreneurs in the publishing industry. We believe authors should retain their royalties and send their voices out to the audience of their choosing.
I started SFC because I knew I had a book inside of me and I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur so it made perfect sense for me to write it and publish it – so I did. Was it easy, oh no? Not to date myself, but when I got started I knew nothing about writing, the elements of publishing and marketing, but I learned. I went to the library, yes, I physically had to drive to the library and read several books in order to obtain what I needed to get the job done.
Lessons I learned along the way:
1. Call the business you don’t want and ask the dumb questions then call the company you do want to do business with to get the better quote/price/rate.
2. Read, read, and read more books on varying topics to broaden your view of the world and people.
3. Don’t count yourself out – ever. Be your biggest and consistent cheerleader.
4. Don’t settle for normal. If you ever meet me and we talk for five minutes, you’ll know there isn’t a thing about me that’s average.
I am an awesome human being. It took me a long time to love the woman that I see in the mirror – but I do. And with this love I plan on loving, encouraging and supporting authors to the best of my abilities.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d explore the 757 First stop: Virginia Beach – the oceanfront.
We’d eat breakfast at local venue on the strip (Atlantic Avenue): waffles, mimosa’s, grits, eggs and bacon.
Second stop: Downtown Norfolk
Stroll the Grandby street area – take pics with the art work
Light Seafood lunch: The Fishing’ Pig
Take in an exhibit at Norfolk’s Glass company
Ride the ferry over to Portsmouth and back
Walk alongside Waterside
Drive to Chesapeake for dinner
Dinner at Off the Hook Seafood Restaurant
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh, this is easy, my family. My husband has and is my greatest form of support, security and encouragement. He is my sounding board and the voice of reason. He is my peace.
My children keep it real with me. They challenge me to be the very best that I can be. If it were not for their unconditional and unwavering support, I probably would have quit long ago. When they look at me I want them to be proud not just because I am their mother but because I don’t quit at anything.
My mentors: Victoria Christopher Murray, Quniana Futrell and my son, Rob Hill Sr. (he doesn’t know this, lol). Victoria has been a friend for over 20 years and has helped mold and shape me as an author. Quniana is my pusher – she pushes me to be even greater than I already am. Last but not least, my son, Rob teaches me consistency; I watch him better himself for himself every day which forces me to do the same.
