We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monica, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks are necessary for all business ventures. Many years ago, my mentor told me “scared money don’t make money” and I’ve been running with that mindset ever since. Now that’s not to say that you throw your time and money into all possible ventures without some thought and consideration. There’s nothing wrong with taking time to understand the risks involved in a decision and deciding to make the investment. Every single entrepreneur, millionaire, billionaire has done the same. Taking risks is a requirement for upward movement.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Being a black woman in corporate America is not easy by any means. So much so that I wrote a whole book about my experiences called “Only One: How to Be a Bad Ass Boss in Corporate America”. My book was released at the onset of the pandemic in May of 2020. It’s a culmination of 25+ years of trails, triumphs and success. The back cover of the book explains it all…

“In her new book, Only One: How to Be a Bad Ass Boss in Corporate America, Monica shares intimate perspectives about her career path and
being an African-American woman in a “not so diverse” corporate world. This book is uniquely written to offer young women—especially young women of color—a practical, informative guide on working in corporate America as a woman.

Being a veteran executive herself allows Monica to offer honest and slightly humorous advice on how to navigate companies that are run predominately by men, and how to interpret and react to their often unsettling behavior. Monica opens a window into her on-the-job experiences, the good decisions and poor choices she’s made and learned from, and the battles she chose to fight—and won!

Any young woman getting started in corporate America will read Only One, and be better equipped to work in difficult environments full of men; be able to identify gentlemen, jerks, and allies; avoid the most common mistakes women make in business settings; build solid relationships inside and outside of the office; and deal with who you are, embrace it, and still get the coveted “seat at the table”.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

There are only a couple of places that I patronize often in Atlanta. The first place would be dinner at Seasons 52 Perimeter to enjoy libations from my favorite bartender, Gerald. Next stop is The Havana Lounge Cigar Bar in Sandy Springs. It’s an upscale, black-owned bar with music every night of the week. The rest of the week we are going to shop at Perimeter Mall and find another restaurant or rooftop bar to enjoy and close out the weekend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I see the definition of strength and courage everyday when I look at my mother, Gloria Brown. For the past five years, my mother has been dealing with illnesses triggered by a prescription drug. The battle for her health has been a long, difficult journey. There are still aspects of her health that we are dealing with but she has never given up! She displays her courage like a shield of honor proclaiming her healing daily. My mom has always been a pillar of strength throughout my entire life but… witnessing her continued strength has proven to me that my success is not by coincidence. My desire to succeed and my will to persevere comes from my mother!
