We had the good fortune of connecting with Mio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mio, why did you pursue a creative career?
My art has created and molded me into this wonderful woman of God. I have been so eager to finding out who I could become in my future. Now the future is here, and I am overly excited and proud of the woman I have become.

Being an artist is such a humbling experience in the most positive of ways. Most times we can doubt ourselves, and having the right people around you will humble those thoughts— creating a new and confident person like me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The way that I try to direct my music is by opening up about deep and personal situations that has happened in my life. Creating a safe place and a safe space for my supporters to relate to my specific transgressions is important to me and my artistry.

At first, it was not an easy thing to do. Nobody just wants to up and tell their life struggles every day or in a way that it is exposing yourself.

I do my best to try to reach out to my supporters by being authentically myself. I realize that people out there are like me and may need motivation to try again or to keep going in whatever it is that they’re doing.

The biggest lesson that I have learned about this experience is to never look at anyone else’s success and compare it to your success. We are all on different paths and we are set to different goals. I would always compare myself to the next upcoming artist because I assumed that I wasn’t doing the right things to make a name for myself.

I just want everyone to understand that you can come from nothing whether it is being homeless, broke, not having any way of transportation, lonely, and heartbroken—No matter what you go through in life, God is always with you and He is always there to lift you up and take you out of the hole that you’re in so that you can be set on a pedestal for others to see, and that you are living testimony.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am usually a homebody so I would just try to come up with activities to do that are memorable.

I do like Ramen and I like Asian cuisines so I will probably take him to my favorite Ramen shop near where I live.

In the area that I stay, it is a lot of fields and sightseeing, big homes, lakes, parks, and many other amazing amenities. I will probably try to take them on a trip down to a farm, or a beautiful field nearby. Maybe a nature trail, inside of a beautiful mountain.

I love, popcorn and Studio Ghibli movies. But, of course I would ask him what they would like to do. Whether it be—go to the movies or shop, or anything that would make them feel like their trip was worth it coming here to be with me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, father, sister, and three brothers. I have been so connected to them musically all of my life!

They are the reason I began my journey and the reason I keep going.
