We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Scheatzle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The one thing about the Keto baking industry that outsiders are unaware of, is the that most of our clients are not on “the keto diet” for weight loss. Outsiders view is rife with falsehoods. Specifically that it is unsustainably bad for you. This simply is not true. Once the goal has been reached many modifications to the lifestyle happen.
My clients vary from recovering cancer patients, people living with lupus, ms, autism, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The Keto Diet was initially developed for epilepsy patients. The side affect was huge weight loss.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The business itself started as something I had been looking into for some time. Then I got divorced. I found my self needing a way to make money after being a stay at home mom for 20 years. I was scared to death! But one thing I know about myself, I am ALWAYS up for a challenge. I took the challenge head on. I went to the library and took out books on how to start a business. I have no formal education after high school. But i attribute much of my success to the fact that I have always tried to continue learning. Once I made a plan, I put my head down and did the work. It was an incredibly scary process, because I had never taking anything like this on on my own before.
I called all the local farmers markets to see if I could attend. I was denied many times. This is part of the learning curve. In order to attend these markets you have to apply in January for the year. This was July. Finally I found one that had an opening and was eager for me to attend because the market manager herself was keto. A stroke of luck or divine guidance. I believe the later. I was able to sell out most weekends. I know i was out there helping people with both their diet goals and dietary restrictions. I was an incredible feeling. Once the market season was over, I moved to online sales. Then Covid hit. My local keto community did not fail me. They continued to order. I delivered. Literally. At that time I had three locations you choose to pick up from. The next fall I moved to another city and moved tot another local market. From there, things have grown to online and shipping for certain items.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out goes to my clients! They have allowed to to follow my passion of starting a business. This business has flourished into something so much bigger than a bakery. I am able to provide cakes and treats to the beautiful people who have not had cakes in years because of dietary restrictions, With out my clients I have no business. They have allowed me to be creative. The have given me the opportunity to create something out of nothing! Who gets to live their dream? I do! The local community supported my business through Covid. It’s growing inch by inch each year. They have blessed me.
