We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Booker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, how do you think about risk?
Hmm… how do I think about risk? When it comes to taking risks, fear is the only false preeminence that actually makes it a ‘risk’. I started Mod Instinct during a pandemic with confidence, because nothing measures up to following your passion and doing what you love. Taking risks has played many roles in my life, from moving to another city as a single mom with my sons and countless other circumstances. Yet, unforeseen opportunities have appeared on my radar from taking these risks. What has always been instilled in me and I thank my father for, is not having fear because in the end it always works out.

What should our readers know about your business?

I started Mod Instinct for women who love the simplicity of fashion, minimal aesthetics that make a powerful statement, I’m not a fan of cynical trends “trying to fit in” I’m always people watching when I go out dining and what I have observed is modern working women, mothers and young adults prefer the simplicity of fashion. Not saying not to be fashion-forward but too trendy is temporary and complicated. I am very proud to step into the retail space and offer women’s apparel that represent my authentic style. I think what is most challenging for retailers is walking the talk. How you treat your employees and your customers… Something as simple as providing a easy return process.

I think back on how amazing my journey has prepared me for business today. Like working in corporate, studies in fashion merchandising and accounting (that’s one for the books sigh lol) alongside of working in retail and film. Those tasks that came along with doing the job all seemed planned when they’re needed to run a successful business. For example, corporate trained me on how to organize a workload of tasks. Working in retail has help me in merchandising and controlling inventory levels (sometimes 😉) and the film industry, oh where should I start…Lets just say dealing with ego’s is testing.

All in all, my customers are the driving force behind Mod Instinct. These women inspire me everyday!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends refer to me as the foodie lol I would definitely have a list of restaurants to check out with amazing patio dining. Some of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta are Divan (best lamb chops in the city), Estrella (their rooftop dining is sexy), South City Kitchen (the food and cocktails are freaking amazing!), West Egg (best grits in the city), Café Intermezzo Midtown (great brunch menu and where I like to go people watch). Also, Fellowship Cigar Bar is a great hangout for couples or singles 😉 I’m not much of a club goer, so we would stick to shopping at local boutique stores and dining.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My encouragement has always come from my two sons. They are my rock. We encourage each other to keep going, I guess they get it from me. Many thanks to my father for instilling in me a no tolerance attitude. He was a fearless marine!
