We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael “Uptown” Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael “Uptown”, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always enjoyed being an entertainer from as far back as I can’t remember. Putting on shows for my family in the living room. Whatever I could do to get a smile or a laugh from others brought me joy. I found that same Joy in music as well, so why not do both? Ludacris is one of my biggest inspirations because he did it first. From being an MC radio personality to being one of the biggest names in hip-hop. I’d like to have that on my résumé as well..
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My story is unique because it’s still being written. We didn’t take the traditional route of just trying to make a “radio” hit. We wanted to make songs that resonate with us and hopefully resonate with other people. We knew it would be a much longer process but we also understood that making music that lasts takes time. We’ve been blessed with multiple opportunities that have just furthered us in our career to this day and it won’t go unnoticed. A lesson I can say I’ve learned early on is that everyone is not your friend. The industry is a weird place and if you can find a solid group of people then stick with them. Everyday is a challenge but that’s what life is about, overcoming challenges and learning from them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s say they get in on a Tuesday. Come with me and @Dj_roco to Blu Cantina EAV I’m hosting every other Tuesday there. You gotta get the southwest egg rolls and the wings. Then Wednesday we chill go to Bible study 🙏🏾 . Thursday catch me at Harold’s in Camp Creek. DJ Roco spinning so the music is great and the food is amazing. Friday night we at Like Glue with @Dj_Finest. The best international in the city, probably the world. Saturday I like to spend time with friends and family so we might do a little game night at the crib. Lastly Sunday, after church we might go to the studio then hit up Our Bar with @Leximoon for karaoke, she says it’s not “her night” but she gets there and takes over so it might as well be.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost shout out to my Amazing wife Nerissa. She is the driving force behind everything I do. Other than God, it’s her and my son who really impact my daily decisions and I’m thankful for them both. Next I have to shout out my group 20 East, we’ve been putting music together for over 10 years now and they’re like brothers to me. All of my friends and family are so important. I’m big on treating your people right.
