We had the good fortune of connecting with Mich Page and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mich, what do you attribute your success to?
One of the top factors of success for an artistic professional is ALWAYS practice. I was having a conversation the other day where someone said to me, ‘It must be so exhausting- I feel like you’re so busy and you never stop!” to which I explained that there are two different kinds of work I do: Paid work for clients, and unpaid work for myself. While I feel like I grow a bit in both types of work I do, I grow substantially more when the work is for myself. Thats the time where I can push myself creatively and really focus on bettering my skills as an artist. When it’s a paid job, it’s “go time” and has to be what the client is asking for. Most of the time, that doesn’t leave a lot of room creatively and is more a time to test the skills I’ve practiced. So my biggest advice to practice your craft for yourself to grow yourself as an artist because thats truly going to lead to the most successful version of you as an artist.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started an Instagram to showcase the creative makeup I was doing in my room in college. At the time, I was a full time student at Michigan State University studying genetics. i had two jobs on top of that and was in multiple clubs outside of school. I always knew makeup was my passion but 2018 was really the year I discovered that. Being so busy with a difficult major, work, and hobbies- picking up a new one was no easy feat. I would stay up and do makeup looks from 9pm-3am sometimes and wake up for an 8 am class the next day. The dedication I had to doing my makeup , no matter how tired I was, was really what made me realize its what I loved more than anything I was doing. I started getting clients in college for formal dances, birthdays, etc. and realized I loved making other people feel beautiful even MORE than i liked doing it on myself (which I didn’t think was possible). I decided going into my senior year of college that I would take a break from school, save up, and move out to California. Obviously this was a huge decision but I knew I would regret it the rest of my life if I didn’t give it a shot! MY friends and family all supported me and we all knew I could go back to school if something happened. Of course, the pandemic started in March 2020 and I was supposed to move in August. I decided despite the pandemic that I would move anyways and just try to practice and learn as much as I could. Fast forward a year and a half later and I’m finally freelancing as a makeup artist steadily. Makeup is still my passion and there isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not excited about what I do, and what’s to come.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always take my friends to Sugar Taco in LA- It’s a vegan taco spot that is AMAZING. Everyone I take there is amazed at how incredible the food is.
I would probably go hiking up the Verdugo mountains, have dinner at a few more spots I love, and maybe hit the beach if it’s warm enough!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
100% my Mom. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for her support, love, and encouragement to chase after my dreams and to chase them hard.
