We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Pinkney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is never giving up. I have been faced with many challenges that sometimes made me want to quit. But I always keep going. I had to realize that in this business you will learn something new every day. Just keep practicing and never give up.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a self taught cake artist. On January 1, 2021 I decided this is the career I wanted to peruse. Prior to my decision I was a personal chef for a couple of years. I realize that it didn’t allow me to show my creative side. I have always knew how to bake cakes, cupcakes, cookies etc but I never knew exactly how to decorate them. I would randomly buy cake decorating supplies hoping to put them to use one day. I also loaded up on sprinkles. I’m obsessed with sprinkles lol! So on Jan 1, 2021 I sat down and watched a few cake decorating for beginners videos on you tube. Baked a mini cake and decorated it. I took a photo of it to mark my journey. It wasn’t the neatest cake but I will say I can look back at that photo and appreciate how far I have came! I think what sets me apart from others is my unique designs that I apply to my cakes. I always let customers know, feel free to send inspiration photos but I do not duplicate others work. I prefer to do my own thing. I’m most proud of how far I have come in a year and all of the positive motivating customer feedback. I must thank my friends Jenna and Regina for teaching me a few skills that I posses today. Both ladies are culinary arts graduates and they both make beautiful cakes. I had Jenna teach me a few one on one classes and Regina is my mentor. In the beginning I really struggles with smoothing buttercream icing. I almost wanted to give up. But I realized over time that practice really does make perfect. My biggest challenge is being left handed. All the tools and instructions are catered towards right hand bakers. Therefore I have to teach myself how to to it the opposite hand. Very challenging.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was to come in town and all plans were on me I would plan the following: 1: Spa Day at Jeju Sauna or The Ritz
2: Lunch/Dinner at one of my favorite steakhouses Ruth’s Chris
3: Shopping at Phipps Plaza & The Shops of BUCKHEAD
4: More shopping at my favorite craft stores, Michaels & Hobby Lobby
5: Chill day at my pool(if it’s hot enough out)
6: Facials at my favorite Esthetician Fantisi Spa in Sandy Springs
7: A few chill days at my place(pajama friendly)
8: Mani & Pedi time
9: I enjoy cooking for my guest so breakfast, lunch, and dinner on me. And of course yummy desserts
10: More shopping. This time we’ll head to Neiman Marcus
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Regina Anderson. She is a childhood friend. She attended culinary school and is a cake artist as well. When I decided I wanted to be a cake artist I reached out to her for a few tips. She offered to mentor me throughout my journey. I really appreciate her for that. To this day she checks in on me and my progress and offers help if needed.
