We had the good fortune of connecting with Meoshia Burgess and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meoshia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my business when I was 8 years old, I got really sick and almost died. I was in the hospital for about 4 weeks when the doctor told my parents it was both that it was nothing they could do but make me comfortable. They advised them to call my pastor and other family members to say goodbye.
My mom fought for me, and made the doctors do more test and bring in a specialist. After that they did and finally found out what was going on with me. After another 8 weeks in the hospital I was finally released.
People think I’m crazy when I say this. While I was in the hospital, God visited me he sit beside me and he told me he my time on earth was far for over, that he had plans for me. When I was released for the hospital I realized that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. So I to make a positive contribution to this world while I’m here.
So I started creating clothing to encourage the youth to not give up and to always be their unique self. I started speaking at schools about bullying and self love which eventually lead to me speaking about gun violence, human trafficking, the importance of voting in your local elections and so much more.
Over the years my name just kinda got bigger and more and more started reaching out to me about speaking at their schools, events. I got asked to be on panels. I got as to mentor other young girls.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started her business in 2015 after having a scare with death. Through my business, I try to inspire other youth to embrace and express their uniqueness through my custom clothing and shoes. Along with speaking at schools and events. Coming close to death caused me to realize that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. I want to make a positive contribution to this world while I’m here.
I use my platform to inspire the youth to be the change, and to use their voices to make change in their community.
As of May 2021 I am the youngest female ever to own my own Record Label/entertainment company called Charlotte Princess Inc. Through my entertainment company I allow young people to tell their story the way they want to. Through music, fashion, modeling or acting. I want them to know it’s ok to use art as a form of Therapy to Express themselves.
I am also a published author, Fashion designer, model, community activist and Talk show host. I run my own nonprofit through my nonprofit. I hosts events in the community, to give the youth a safe place to come and have fun. I also have a free community store where anyone in the community can come and shop for food, clothing, household items, cleaning supplies, baby products and more. I don’t ask questions or make them get referrals, all they have to do is contact me and I setup’s a time and date for them to come to shop. I want to help take the stress off those in need. Although the goal is to relieve the burden of going without in a larger sense I want people to find hope and to let them know there is a community of people who care about them with no strings attached. It’s not solving every problem they have, but hopefully it’s giving them a bit of hope to carry on to the next day and to connect them to someone else who can help in another way.
I have teen girls groups where we meet and talk about things that teen girls can’t talk about with this parents and friends. It’s a safe place no cell phones or parents are allowed. The sessions last about an hour and half for 8 weeks and they meet twice a month. At the end of the 8 weeks the teens receive a love basket filled with hygiene items along with one of my custom hoodies or shirts.
I was crowned Ashanti Queen in April of 2019 at the African American Festival in Charlotte, NC, hosted by Mrs. Dianna Davis owner of Crown Magazine. I have been featured in over 35 magazine, including Savoir-Faire magazine model search. I have walked in over 75 fashion shows. She is MODA Runway Model and have walked in NYFW and Paris fashion week.
I was giving the name Charlotte Princess by Mecklenburg County sheriff Garry McFadden. I was awarded teen of the year in 2021 and Rising Youth Entrepreneur & Community engagement. In 2021. I also received a proclamation Day “Empowered Youth Day” From the Mayor Of Charlotte for December 11 in honor of my annual Empowered Youth awards. In January of 2022 I received the Mayor’s Alliance Mentee of the Year.
I was the Co-Chair of the CUC 100 where I partnered with other organizations to bring change to the black community. I stepped down from that seat in September of 2021. I am also the youngest grantee to receive a jumpstart grant from the city of Charlotte in 2019 and was still the youngest receiving the grant in 2022 when the stopped giving them out .
I have taking a stand against Gun Violence, Bullying, Sex Trafficking and youth mental health. But my main focus is to encourage the youth to be the change.
I launched her Charlotte Princess Mobile Café and dropped my own coffee line in July 2022.
By the end of 2022 I plan to have a teen lounge and learning center opened where youth can come learn a trade and have a safe place to play video games and have fun.
I will graduate this year and to attend Howard University.
I hope to live long enough to one day sit on the Supreme Court- and maybe even become president of the United States. All while running my own clothing design company.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to my favorite restaurant, Eddie’s On Lake Norman. And just spend the day on the lake and eating and shopping. I would also take them to uptown Charlotte and let them see all the beautiful parks and landmarks we have.
We would definitely visit Sports Connection and have a day fun and games there. We will go to South Park mall probably Concord for a day of fun and shopping.
Definitely take them to a nascar race at the Charlotte Speedway. Maybe catch a Carolina Panthers game or Charlotte Hornets game depending on the time of year they visit.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost I want to thank God for watching over me and protecting me.
I want to shoutout my mom, without her I literally wouldn’t be here doing what I’m doing. She advocated. for me when I when I couldn’t speak for myself. She is my backbone. No matter what mistakes I make she is always their to support me mentally and encourage me to continue my fight.
I want to think all of my aunties and uncles in the community that stand by me. That’s speaks life over me. That prayed with me and for me everyday. Thank you to all my supporters who show up for me each and everyday. Thank you to everyone who believed in me and took a chance on me. When others said I was to young to know what I’m talking about.
Thank you to Mrs Kesha Porter, this lady is always there for me. She always keeps it real. She checks me when I need to be checked and loves on me when I need to be loved.
Thanks to Mrs Michelle Obama for showing young girls like me, that we are more than just a pretty face.
Thank to Mrs Sarah Jakes Roberts for her book Woman Evolve and all her motivational YouTube videos she has got me through a lot of time when I wanted to give up.
Thanks to Nipsey Hussle he is the reason I try and tell young black males that they can make a differences, their voices does matter no matter what walks of life they come from. And if they might have been on a wrong path in life they truly can change.
