We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvin Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melvin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I believe being an artist put me in the best position to be myself . I always felt like I was different in a way , so when I started making music , I felt that energy & connection with it right away . Being an artist is one of the things I was blessed with & I honestly believe I can take it far . I don’t feel like that about many things .
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started realizing I was good at putting words together when I was about 14 . Me & my childhood bestfriend would call a chat hotline & leave raps on the voicemails for people to listen & reply to . once the hood reply’s started coming in , I knew I had something . I recorded my song song when I was 18 , in college & working at Burger King . I put it on SoundCloud & played it everyday . It was called “ Royals “ . My brother Tenichi Jr. & I started to really want to take it serious . Got connected to my good friend & engineer Jae Major & he’s helped me shape my sound into what it is today . It definitely isn’t easy . The mental hurdles you have to go thru as a creative is way more intense than I imagined , but with prayer , hard work & dedication , anything can be achieved .
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We for sure have to go to The Battery Atlanta . it’s such a melting pot of different people & activities . Maybe even Andrettis . Got to take them there at least once just for the culture . Of course Skyline on the ferris wheel . Some more hole in the wall places too , I’d be here all day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve all the credit first & foremost . Without them , I mean I literally don’t know where I would be . They never forced me into doing anything & let me figure my path out on my own & it’s definitely challenging but I appreciate them for that in hindsight .
