We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa DeMayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have not always been a big risk taker. Leaving one career behind to start another felt like a huge risk! The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Digital House Media is a creative agency that focuses on helping businesses grow with branding, high performing website design & digital marketing.
I discovered my love for design and internet marketing in 2011 and it served as a much needed creative outlet from my time working in a public servant role in the NY Courts. I had always dreamed of having my own business and had tried half heartedly to start various businesses over the years, but nothing stuck. I knew early on that this was the field that I wanted to pursue and this was what I was going to do – no matter how hard it was or how long it took.
I started my business on the side, working nights and weekends. I found it difficult at times because I was a single mom with a full time job and a long commute. What kept me going was my love for what I was learning – there was always something new and I enjoyed putting into practice the things that I was learning.
I do not come from an entrepreneurial family. My parents both had government jobs and it seemed that I would follow in their footsteps. My court job gave me financial stability, but I was unfulfilled and not excited about my future. It took me until 2016 to resign and go all in on my business. I’ll never forget that day – it was exhilarating yet scary as hell to put in my resignation. I do wish I had gone “all in” sooner!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve been living in the Atlanta area for 4 years and I haven’t spent a lot of time in downtown Atlanta! There’s actually so much to do where I live – in Cobb County.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutouts – this would be a website/blog that inspired me to think differently and therefore do things differently – stevepavlina.com. This is a website with articles and resources about personal development. Exploring the site led me to reading additional books which introduced me to new concepts in terms of how to look at life in general and what we want to achieve for ourselves.
