We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Vulnerability. I think many in media are pressured to think they and their lives have to be perfect. However, the general public doesn’t trust perfect and would instead be entertained by someone they can relate to. Sharing your vulnerabilities in an honest way has been the most effective tool in connecting with my audience.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If I had told the people around me at 15-years-old that I would be the first out lesbian on morning radio in Atlanta, and one of the few in the nation, and that career would be a successful one, I would have been laughed out of the room. But that indeed is what happened, and I am proud to have served the LGBT+ community by representing myself authentically to millions of people. That success is not an isolated one, since my supportive colleagues and the generous audiences I had the pleasure of entertaining were there with me along the way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a history buff, whenever someone comes to Atlanta for the first time I want to make sure they get a sense of what makes this city so special. I would want them to take in a show at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, possibly even having them stay at the Georgian Terrace across the street. I’d take them to Pemberton Place and show them all around that downtown area. But Atlanta is also a collection of fantastic small neighborhoods, so areas around Marietta, Smyrna, Sandy Springs and Roswell would be part of the tour of homes and restaurants.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I learned the art of storytelling while part of two iconic Atlanta morning shows: The Morning X with Barnes, Leslie and Jimmy and The Bert Show with Bert, Jeff, Jenn and myself. Being around these incredibly talented people on a daily basis inspired me to up my game to a level that would hopefully make others feel the way these individuals made me feel.
