We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Watters and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, do you have a budget? How do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
I have gone in and out of freelance and full-time employment my entire career, so my budget changes. These days, I am employed fulltime, so the money I make from my primary job goes straight into funding my life with my partner. Bills, bills, bills.

I have a separate personal account where I keep track of the money I generate through murals, art sales, workshops, etc. That is the money I use to fund more art projects and shows. Its sort of self-sustaining in that regard.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a really scrappy person. I did not have a lot of money growing up, and that continued on as I started my professional life. I took a lot of gigs that weren’t in my wheelhouse because I needed the cash. Because of that, I learned quickly and developed a really broad portfolio. The advantage of that is that I know a little about a lot of things. The disadvantage is that I did not have a clear idea of MY aesthetic and MY voice for a long time. I have been working in the arts for over a decade and I feel like I am only just now understanding my own point of view and the type of work I value creating.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m an early-bird and I live in Ormewood Park, so our first stop is to Hodgepodge to grab a cup of coffee. Then, I take them straight to cabbage town to walk around and see the murals and the neighborhood in general. To me, that is a great place to show what Atlanta is all about. Old architecture, a close community, big ole porches. But also diverse and ever-changing artwork.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank all the female artists I have met along the way. I have had so many mentors that showed me it IS possible to be successful while pursuing a creative career and creative projects.
