We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Paterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business because I wanted to be able to spend more time with my family. Shortly after I had my third child I had the itch to pursue my creativity professionally- but still have the balance and freedom to be the type of mother I wanted to be. I already had my interior design degree and experience under my belt So, I decided that starting an interior design business would be the best option to help provide financial stability and quality experiences with my family. And, of course, I like being an interior designer because I get to use my creativity every day. I love being able to help people live their lives in a space that’s designed just for them—and it’s so rewarding when I know that I’ve made someone’s day better, just by letting them live in the space they love!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Megan Paterson Interiors is a residential interior design firm located in North Atlanta, our main focus is on kitchen, bathroom, and basement remodel design – although we take on much larger and much smaller projects as well! I would definitely say what sets us apart is that we create design-only plans from all of the selections and specifications, to the cabinet details and planning, to the drawings and 3D renderings, We really focus on design and creating spaces that are planned both based on our client’s aesthetics but also their family and how the space should function for them specifically.

I got to where I am in business today because I grew my business slowly and intentionally. I’ve tried to start businesses in the past, and I always felt that if I didn’t see instant sucess – that meant I was failing and I gave up. This business has been so different and I’ve had a much healthier mindset. I see working on my business, engaging with the kindest people ever on Instagram, and even doing this right now as a success for my business. I’ve learned to slow down and really appreciate each step of the way.

I definitely wouldn’t say it’s been easy at all, I’ve definitely been tested. Having your own business and a family can be so exhausting – but I try my best to really compartmentalize work from family. When I’m with my family – I’m with my family and when I’m with my clients or space planning a kitchen – I’m extremely focused. The hardest part would probably be having to wear all of the hate of a small business – running the business, social media, emails, marketing, and also you know – designing!

I would want the world to know that interior design is personal – our homes shouldn’t look like a magazine – we have life, kids, pets, family, and sometimes just a messy house. Interior design is about combining who my clients are, how their family use the space, and what makes home feel most special to them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m typically a homebody, but if I do go out with my best friend, I want yummy food. We would most likely look up the most unique restaurants around Atlanta, pick a few, and hop restaurants and share everything! Then we would find the best dessert close by. Then because I’m almost 30 – we would go home and go to bed around 9-10 pm.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I absolutely owe so much of my success to my husband. Ryan took on the role of being our sole provider, amazing father, and incredibly supportive husband, all while I was building my business. He supported me, gave me advice, and I could not be more appreciative of everything he’s done for not only me but for our family.
