We had the good fortune of connecting with Mckenzie Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mckenzie, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
I could easily list off things that make me happy, from my family to my friends to my education. These are all amazing things in my life, but this question really made me think. Oftentimes I get so caught up in the negativity in life and I never fully dwell on things that make me happy or really invest in those things. Since the pandemic, I have started to invest my time and effort into things that truly bring me joy. I love creating content that allows me to express myself through fashion. Last summer during quarantine, I was able to attack so many ideas I put aside. While being inside and socially distanced I recruited my little sister for some photoshoots on the back of our old treehouse. I was inspired by Harry Styles and his newest album so I based looks off of song titles. That is what truly made me happy in a time where there was so much uncertainty and devastation. I am happy when I can be myself. Whether that be organzing photoshoots in my childhood home or sitting in my English courses at college. I find that my happiness comes from those who I surround myself with as well. I am still nagavating life and of course it comes with its setbacks but I would say, at least for right now, I have found what makes me happy and I am holding onto it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started Vie Bohème my sophomore year of high school. I had been bullied a lot in school for what I wore and it was frustrating because how I dressed was how I communicated. I was quiet and shy but with my clothes it was something that allowed me to speak loudly without ever opening my mouth. I had thought about making a blog that was really only for myself but I had a couple of friends that encouraged me to create an Instagram account as well to reach a bigger audience. I am so proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and posting content online. I don’t get too wrapped up in the idea of having a huge following. For me, having a corner of the Internet with a few hundred followers is just enough. I have learned not to focus so closely on the amount of likes or follows. I am just happy to have a platform to share my voice through my outfits. This was definitely not easy. I have struggled a lot with thinking that my account lacks potential or my outfits aren’t creative enough. I have struggled to find a photographer which has resutled into taking most of my content on my I-phone but honestly, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I do struggle with feeling less than by not having access to incredible cameras or light rings, etc. However, those will come in time and I am just happy to be expressing myself though what I love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am so lucky to live in a small town with so many cute coffee shops and boutiques. I am also lucky to live near quirky small towns that have so much history. My small town is relatively busy on the weekends so I would probably venture off to some other towns in my surrounding area! I would definitely take her to some of my favorite coffee shops first. It is something we love doing together and it gives us time to catch up over a good cup of coffee. After that I would probably take her to one of my favorite brunch spots a couple of towns over. We love thrifiting and antiquing so we would definitely fit in time to do those things.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout the people that have supported me from the moment I decided to create a space where I share my thoughts and showcase my creativity through clothes. Specifically, my family, Grace, Montana, Madison, Kayli, Cassidy, and Barisuka. They have uniquely and individually supported me in so many ways. They encourage my confidence and appreciated my creativity. They have driven me to prime spots for oufit pictures or have even been featured in my blog. I am truly thankful for each person that has devoted time in helping me be who I am today.
