Meet Maurice Thompson: Innovator and Creative

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maurice Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maurice, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Both of my parents are entrepreneurs, so growing up I was always around different business endeavors. I saw how they were able to make a living doing the things that they loved and I knew that it was definitely something that I wanted to do for myself. The actual idea for Shameless Society was my second attempt at starting a clothing brand, but when my friend Damo pitched me the name and the meaning behind it I knew that this was something that we could run with. We wanted to create a brand and identity around it that welcomes everyone. I feel like in today’s society, people work so hard to put up these facades, we just want people to be their authentic selves.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Shameless Society apart from other brands is the message behind the brand. We really want people to live Shamelessly. Meaning doing what you want and what you like without worrying about what people might say or think about you. As we start to grow more as a brand, I’m excited for more people to learn and understand the message that we’re sharing. The idea of Shameless Society has been around for almost 3 years now, and it definitely hasn’t been an easy road. We went from a group of around 8 people throwing ideas around to now just 3 partners actually bringing ideas to life. Over these 3 years not only have I seen growth in the company, but also myself. I try to practice what I’m preaching, so over time I’ve become a lot more comfortable in my own skin. Being Shameless is a lot easier said than done, but once I started doing things that I wanted to, I just feel like life just became easier for me. That’s what I want the brand to show people, once you’re comfortable in your own skin and living for yourself, you’ll see benefits of it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always take people to Stone Mountain to catch either sunrise or sunset, we’ll go walk around Little Five Points, and then I have a few hidden spots here and there. Other than that it’s really whatever they wanted to see in the city. In terms of food though I have a couple go to spots. Depends on what I’m feeling on the day and what they eat, but we’re hitting at least 2 or 3 of these spots: Fox Bros, Fellini’s, Raging Burrito, Masti, Soul Vegetarian, and Jazzy Juice Cafe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shoutout to my parents for sure. They’ve always pushed me, my brother, and our friends to find what we love and do it. No matter what decisions I make they always are behind me 100%. Herman and Rajiv, my two partners for helping push Shameless Society to where it is now and where it’s going in the future. Damo for being truly shameless, embodying what it really means, and coming up with the name and idea of Shameless Society. My whole squad, they know who they are. Always rocking Shameless Society, spreading the message, and always being down to help me whenever I need it. Last but not least, Malik, Awesome, Tebibu, Mason, and Ben. There was a point when I was going to sell the rest of my inventory and just be done, but the energy and passion that they came with inspired me to keep going.
