We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Jean Pierre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially, I just couldn’t get a job. Nobody would hire me! They must’ve known that I only March to the beat of my own drum. I use to always play in my homegirls hair and one day, one of my friends paid me to do her hair and that’s how everything started in high school..

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a hairstylist can be so intimidating, especially when you are first starting out because there are so many great hairstylist who slay with they eyes closed. For me it was important to stand out in other ways. I never thought I was the best hairstylist and I still don’t try to be. I’m just the best ‘me’ and that’s what works. My humor and dancing is what helped me to shape my own individuality within the beauty industry. Being a 6 foot ball of energy, hitting the routines and making my clients feel pretty was all I needed during covid to find my lane.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m still new to atl, I moved here in January but if I had to show a friend a good time, I’m taking them to truth lounge on Monday for R&B night, 656 of Tuesday for taco Tuesday and Traffik on Sunday for Sunday funday! In between we can try the best restaurants this city has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Special shout out to Tamika Gibson, CEO and founder of Boldhold Lace adhesive. She has been my biggest mentor when it comes to navigating how to be a hairstylist in the industry. She knows and has seen so much, and she always schooling me and giving me gems. I’m soo grateful for her.
