We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well growing up in a west Indian home food was a huge influence on my life my mother is Guyanese and my father and business partner is Jamaican. So there was a constant fusion of different smells and tastes that I experienced growing up. Which as a child growing up in New York I can now say I may not have appreciated that as much and would usually prefer Mc’Donalds, I didn’t have a clue haha. But we wanted to bring a fresh seasonal approach to Caribbean food and make it affordable as well.

What should our readers know about your business?
Nyam is a food service centered around Caribbean cuisine viewed through an international lens. We are still very much in the early stages, and have obvious challenges due to the current events that have presented themselves. We offer catering services, meal prep services, as well as weekly food specials. We are very excited about the journey of continuing to create a menu that our customers can enjoy and share with their loved ones.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well i’m a foodie shocker lol so most of the itinerary would be taking them to my favorite eatery’s around the city. Some of which are Top Spice for Thai, they have amazing food and a great lunch special. The high museum of art is never a disappointment, and one of my favorite things to do when I have the time. In the evening we could go to Rock Steady which is an afro- Caribbean inspired restaurant/ lounge that’s ambiance is 2nd to none and the food and music is always great.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely give a shoutout to my father first and foremost, he has always had a passion for food and entertaining. Although I may not have gravitated to it early on, I can say that his love for cooking rubbed off on me somewhere along the way. I also have a tremendous group of friends and family that support me, and keep me motivated to continue to push myself in all areas of the business.
