We had the good fortune of connecting with Marquita Sutton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marquita, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own businesses, was first, I wanted to do something that I loved versus just existing in a day-to-day basis doing something that society has required me to do. I also wanted to do something that would create generational wealth that I would be able to leave with my loved ones when I’m no longer around. And lastly I just wanted to be an example for women that look like me!! To show us that we can do anything we put our mind to and we can overcome any obstacle or hurdle put in front of us to be the better version of us we can be.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The thing that I am most proud about when it comes to owning these businesses is the fact that I own three businesses lol!!! When everyone decided to look at me crazy and said I was doing too much or maybe now is not the time I stepped out on faith and did it anyway!!! Not one day do I regret making those moves and building an empire. I got to where I am by faith and my spiritual life. My life entails a lot of prayer and a lot of faith in God. Because the reality of being an African-American woman trying to progress in this way of life is very hard and you have to find a balance and sound mind in order to keep going. Has this way been easy, definitely not. But every day there is something encouraging that stands out whether it’s someone saying I’m proud of you or one of my clients saying we’re going all the way together ,we’ll get through this. Those few components have always given me that extra boost to keep going when troubling times come. Few of the things that I’ve learned so far in this way of owning my own businesses is, always be open to new ideas, always ready to learn, and be motivated when others aren’t. And one of the most important things that I want people to know about the versatile brand is that we are homegrown to respect, honor, familyship and bonds. Never leaving a brother or a sister behind!!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the City of Raleigh there’s quite a few places that are pretty cool and unique to its own. But if you’re looking for a great time downtown Raleigh is the place. From bar crawls to brunch events and of course the night scene, you’re bound to have the time of your life. From Glenwood avenue to Blount Street all the way around to harrgett Street. From club solace for a night of dancing and fun, to Capital grille for a nice intimate dinner on the town. To me Raleigh is the best kept secret!!!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely want to shout out my clients, from the music artists to the business clients that I manage. Under versatile music group we want to shout out: Vineice, D.blackman, and Jurt. Under the management we would like to shout out: Janay(makeup artist), Cherita Streater(chef), Sheena(clothing designer), Nattrulyni (radio personality, host, entrepreneur), Tamika Archie(body sculptor and massage therapist). Every last one of these individuals are the motivation that I have for myself. Wanting to see each one of these individuals go to the next level in their lives and provide for their families with doing what they love most is the drive!!! I’m grateful and I appreciate every last one of them!
