We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariah White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Myxed Service to build a bridge between my two passions, being creative and serving my community! I am Mariah White, Master Cosmetologist and Community Activist. I began my activist career in undergrad at Clark Atlanta University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in hopes to become a criminal defense attorney. I shortly pivoted career interests and found myself working at the Georgia House of Representatives where I fell in love with the ins and out of local politics, policy and process of change.

Throughout the 3 years of being heavily involved with political campaigns, organizations, nonprofits, fundraising, researching, event organizing and public speaking — I was able to hone incredible skills that inspired only more community engagement.

In 2020, the world experienced a significant shift due to COVID-19 that unfortunately ended my term with the GA House of Representatives. As shaken up as I was when hearing my days at the capitol were numbered, it also motivated me to have a direct hand in the community myself and not through an already established organization.

That Fall, I asked a former classmate that was equally community oriented as I, to help and support me with hosting my first Blanket and Food Drive for my community service organization. That December we were all to giveaway Blankets in need, pre-packaged lunches, and also brand new clothes and shoes to West End Atlanta Residents in need!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Myxed Service is a community service organization that provides information targeting the youth of Atlanta, Georgia. My goal with Myxed Service is to bring actual community back! With the hard reset COVID did on the world, and with the rapid evolution of the internet, I personally feel my generation is becoming more and more individualistic. And as individuality is vital, I believe we have become more individualistic in a negative way. For example, many restaurants and businesses became less interactive — QR codes for menus, order & paying before sitting, delivery services, driving services, pickup grocery services and etc. These type of services eliminates human interaction which is very detrimental to the body and mind. To be born in the 2000s is to not know a world without internet. And my goal is to show GenZ how fun, refreshing and strong we could be with better community participation. To get off the phones and in the streets!

What sets my organization apart is the target audience being my own generation which I feel I can connect too and reach the most. Every week I post 3 segments Mindful Monday, Wellness Wednesday and Fun Friday to keep GenZ updated issues or health concerns, community events, volunteering/fundraising, and also entertainment events that my peers could get involved with for free or a small fee.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite things to do in the city is to eat and genuinely be outdoors. My #1 spot to be is anywhere in Midtown! Ponce city market is my go to easily, it has food, shopping and attractions. As well as the belt line, there’s endless activities to participate in there! And I personally vote Ton Ton Ramen in Ponce the best ramen in the city. Atlanta is the home of a good Lychee or Lemon drop martini haha, so stop by Atrium, E Ramen, or Ormby’s for a great drink and meal!
To wind down, I love to visit piedmont park, the waterfall in Roswell Mill or the free yoga sessions that are held at Uptown Buckhead every week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d first and foremost want to Shoutout my Mother. She has always instilled in me that it is better to have your own than to work towards someone else’s dream. This mindset is why I had the confidence to create my own community service organization. She always said “I ain’t nobody’s worker bee”, haha. And I used to think she was a little crazy for saying this when I was younger, but when I was cut from the House of Reps. it quickly made me realize how much invested I was into someone else’s dream, goals and political views. And how I should put just as much work ethic into creating my own community outreach.

I’d also like to give a special shoutout to Imani Cohen, my spiritual coach, with helping me realizing how to tie my two gifts or service into one reality. Changing my perspective on life and accepting God in my everyday career dreams and goals.
