We had the good fortune of connecting with Mari Geier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mari, what matters most to you?
I have spent most of my adult live building community. So I would say the value that matters most to me is LOCAL. The concept of supporting your local businesses, paying attention to what is going on in your local community and being of service to the people that make up that community is so important to me. Living in a major metro area (I live Brookhaven, a suburb of Atlanta), it is easy to get lost and go with the flow. Shopping at big box grocers and allowing the convenience of the world to support daily life becomes quite easy. Everything we “need” is close by and even as close as pressing a button. But for our community to thrive and for each of us to be as healthy as we can physically, emotionally and spiritually, it’s important that we start paying attention to where the things we consume daily come from and prioritizing local. This can give us a unique opportunity to get closer to the source of the food we eat and the items we consume and in doing that we also get the positive energy that comes from the personal connections of knowing your merchants.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nuts ‘n Berries Neighborhood Market was founded in 1980 by a couple looking to bring healthy, fresh food to the Atlanta area. I purchased the business from the original owners in 2015 and today I look to continue the tradition with a focus on being a bridge to the beginner embarking on a new lifestyle focused on healthy choices. Heath Food Stores can be overwhelming so we work to reduce the fear and make sure none of our customers ever feel judged for their choices but rather welcomed and supported. We are constantly learning and then educating everyone we come in contact with. And we try to keep things light, always remembering that having fun is part of being healthy. But most importantly we are proud to be a local company and support other local companies that are focused on providing food and products with clean ingredients that help our community take steps toward greater health. Running a small independent retail store isn’t always easy and being situated in an area with competition on every corner is always a challenge. But we pride ourselves on providing living wages to our team members always remembering that they, too, are on a journey to health. We focus on educating and empowering our customers and that helps us stand apart from other stores as well. And while it’s easy to get lost in the business side of things, I have found that the most rewarding part of being a local business is seeing the smiling faces of the people we have walked through a tough health scare or just helped get started with a new routine. We have the very best customers around!
I would like to invite anyone that is looking for a place to feel welcome and supported on your journey to health to stop in to Nuts ‘n Berries in Brookhaven! Whether you need some clean protein powder, are looking for raw milk or regenerative beef, have food allergies, want to clean up your personal care routine or just need to keep your immune system strong, we would love to help you out! See you soon!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I always live for those that cannot. So I dedicate this shoutout and every one to my mom and dad. I am blessed with so many things in life and while they are not physically here to share in those gifts, I know they look upon the life I have created and are proud.
