We had the good fortune of connecting with Margaret South and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Margaret, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had great opportunities in the movie business. I learned some important skills, but also meaningful life lessons that have stayed with me as I run my own business now. I’m able to take all my gifts and coach writers to enjoy the writing process and to be the best they can be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been a “word person.” I like to read and write, and was delighted to learn that I could be a professional Reader. I started in New York working for free. I began a free program to teach playwriting to kids in underserved schools.
Soon. I was reading plays for the New York Shakespeare Festival and Highgate Pictures for twenty-five dollars a screenplay/playscript/manuscript. I moved to Los Angeles and worked as a secretary, reading scripts on the side and waiting for a chance to become a paid Professional Reader. The call came one night from the Divine Miss M– Bette Midler.
I convinced her to form a company, “All Girl Productions,” so she, her partner Bonnie Bruckheimer and I could producer our own films and television projects.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
David Kirkpatrick, former head of Paramount studios, remembered me from my work on “Beaches” at Disney Studios. He invited me to mentor members of his new program, “Story Summit Writers School.” Thousands of loyal followers take workshops, hire private coaches, and choose from a variety of classes, including mine.
