We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking is what got me signed as a producer—it’s in my DNA!

I come from Quincy, Florida—a place where opportunities in music were practically non-existent. There weren’t many artists or producers around to guide the way or drop jewels on how to make it. It was like being lost without a map, but I was determined to create my own path.

One day, while I was at work, I got a text about a music panel happening nearby that evening. Without hesitating, I knew I had to be there. This was my chance to shake up my reality, to take a shot in the dark and make something happen. So, I showed up.

I remember sitting through that panel, absorbing every word, all while hyping myself up to make my move. By the time it ended, I had my game face on. No more overthinking—it was go time! I walked straight up to one of the producers, threw out my energy, and went for it.

Here’s where things got wild—I invited the producer to come vibe at the studio that night if he had some time. Now, the twist? I didn’t actually own a studio! But I knew somebody who did. I created the moment out of thin air! I hit up the studio owner, told him I just secured a top producer to roll through with “me” if he could open up. He was hyped, and the spot was ready!

When we stepped into that studio, I made sure the energy was on a hundred. The vibe was undeniable, the music hit right, and the connection was electric. That night changed everything—I got signed and soon found myself working on projects with legends like SWV, Missy Elliott, Rich Homie Quan, Sukihana, City Girls, and many more.

But honestly, none of it would’ve happened if I hadn’t taken that risk, trusted God, and decided to bet on myself. That’s the energy I live by—taking the shot, creating opportunities, and letting faith do the rest!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Music Industry Academy is the premier educational platform designed for high school students, particularly the aspiring artist and producer, Our goal is to teach them the ins and outs of the music business while helping them create, promote, and release their own music. What sets us apart is that we provide practical hands on experience from the real industry professionals who do this everyday. Our students learn everything from producing tracks to understanding marketing and branding, we cover every aspect of what it means to be successful in the music world.

One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing the impact this Academy has had on young people. Watching students create, perform and release their own music while helping them grow in confidence, and understand the business side of things has been incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about teaching them how to make music—it’s about giving them the tools to build sustainable careers.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. There were a lot of challenges, especially when it came to building trust in an industry that’s already saturated with opportunities for older or more established artists. But I focused on what I knew—my experience in the music industry and my passion for education. I overcame those challenges by staying consistent, building strong community relationships, and listening to what my students needed.

Along the way, I’ve learned that patience and adaptability are key. The industry is constantly changing, and it’s important to stay ahead of the curve while also staying true to your vision. Another lesson is that no matter how difficult things get, staying connected to your ‘why’—the reason you started—will always pull you through.

What I want the world to know about The Music Industry Academy is that we are here to empower the next generation of music leaders. We’re creating a space where young artists can not only develop their talent but also understand the business behind it. And as for my story—I’m just a music professional who wanted to give back. I’ve been where these students are, and I want them to have the opportunities that I didn’t. This is my way of paying it forward.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
