We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcel DM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Well, it all started way back in 5th grade. That was when you were allowed to pick an instrument and join the school band. My mom and older sister were both in band all throughout school, so it seemed interesting to me. I chose percussion just because it seemed cool. Little did I know I would fall in love with music after that.
I continued to play percussion through the rest of my academic career up until graduating high school. During my school years, I found out my cousin, who was a year older and also a percussionist, had started making beats and putting them on Myspace to sell. After a few talks with him I decided I would try to make beats too. Using my knowledge of being a trained musician I used my concert band and orchestra skills and techniques and started making beats while in the 8th grade.
I found it challenging yet rewarding. Frustrating yet satisfying. Being able to create something original starting only with your thoughts and putting it out into the world for other people to enjoy and create memories with is an amazing feeling. That is why I continue to make music to this day.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I think sets me apart from others is that i don’t just focus on one genre or subgenre. I’m interested in hip-hop(boom bap, trap, NY drill, Uk drill), R&B, pop, dubstep/EDM, and even Rock. I make all genres of beats and even mash them together sometimes.
I’m most excited about connecting with other artists and creating songs to put out to the people.
Being a music producer is the furthest thing from easy, Anybody can make beats in these times. All you really need is a computer/laptop and some Wi-Fi. Makes for a very competitive and over saturated space. The best way to overcome those obstacles is to try and stay original and authentic… and of course a little bit of luck!
I want the world to know that I truly care about music and I’m not just doing this for money. Of course, I want to make a living, this is a career to me, not just a hobby. I take this very seriously. I want the songs I produce to leave memories and create memories. I want my songs to be the one that came on during your first kiss, the one you sing to your kids at night, your first dance at your wedding. Songs you’ll always remember and talk/listen to years from now,
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from Washington, we literally have any kind of attraction you could ever want depending on the season. I think the best season is probably the end of summer/beginning of fall here. We could start the first day by visiting the state fair. Tons of rides and amazing food. I’m a big sports fan so a few of the days would be reserved for going to a Sounders game and a Seattle Storm game. Been a WNBA and overall women’s sports fan since the early 2000’s so taking them to the Storm game would be very important to me.
I would have to spend probably 1-2 days just in Seattle. Way too many things to explore and see to even write about!
Last two days would probably be spent checking out all the malls we have. From South Hill to Southcenter, Tacoma to The Commons, The outlet Collection to Northgate.
As far as food goes, the only specific places I would show them are some of my favorite local sushi spots. Also, no visit to Seattle is complete without getting a couple deluxes and a shake from Dick’s Drive-In, an old fashion burger spot that serves the best burgers I’ve ever had.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to all the fans who continue to support not only me, but ever other up and coming aspiring musician. Without the fans, we’re just a bunch of wierdos sitting in our rooms making music on our computers, writing personal stories in lyric form on our phones.
