We had the good fortune of connecting with Malika Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malika, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Patience…I would say my business has taught me so much patience in the past years I have been established. Successful businesses do not grow overnight and that’s something I had to face reality with. To be transparent, sometimes we tend to compare ourselves to other businesses and their success and it could lead to lack of creativity and motivation. It really takes time and patience to build and grow your passion/business to become a profitable and a sustainable company. I like to compare my business to a flower. First you start as a seed from the ground constantly feeding and nourishing the business to grow. What you put into your business will determine its growth. During the journey you start to establish roots (a foundation or a name for yourself). There will be times were some petals of your flower may wither, that will be the time in your business where you will need to cut losses, re-brand, and nourish your business’ needs for regrowth. It happens to us all, but as long as you are patient through this journey, your business will blossom before your eyes and you’ll look back and say I DID THAT!!!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Art of Photography
It’s something about capturing a client’s true emotions through photography, whether it’s a lifestyle session, newborn session, or branding session. It’s a form of art! I love to see my clients transform with confidence once they are behind the camera. I pride myself in creating the ultimate client experience and one that they will never forget. The smallest things matter in the client experience like prompt responses, creative brainstorming, wardrobe assistance, location scouting, discovery calls, and feedback surveys. These things I am most proud of and it provides my business with professional aesthetics. Being consistent and professional at all times has really attracted my clients and has grown my business. I try to put myself in the consumers’ shoes when inquiring about a service and what I look for in detail. It’s definitely not easy to juggle a business full time and being a full time wife and mother to a toddler and one on the way, but so rewarding and it gives me purpose. Yes, there are always challenges in running your own business, but I always set time for myself alone to gather my thoughts and try again the next day. I learned that it’s important to take time for your self to re-collect your thoughts and get inspired with new and fresh ideas that tap into your creativity. I try to pamper myself by taking a trip or reading a book with a cup of wine or coffee. I want the world to know that Akilma B. Photography is here to bring your vision to reality, we take time in getting to know your wants and needs to provide the ultimate experience and memories.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m truly blessed and thankful for my clients and family. My family has motivated me to stay focus and grounded. My husband is my support system and has always showed his interest in my interest from day one. My clients are a major part in my growth as well, without them there would be no Akilma B. Photography. I am thankful that they trust me with their visions and value my opinions and direction. My clients are family to me!
