We had the good fortune of connecting with Malaika Lubega and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malaika, how do you think about risk?
As a full-time entrepreneur today, I realize that taking risks is necessary for one to grow and evolve. I have taken many a-risk in my life in different situations. Some worked out fantastically, and others didn’t, but those “learning lessons” did not deter me. Whatever the situation that fell through only made me that much more determined, more focused, and more ambitious. If we don’t take risks, we miss out on what could have been. For example, making a decision to quit my life in healthcare to become a full-time professional organizer and interior stylist was a risk that has paid off ten-fold. My passion and commitment to help others live a more mindful, enriched, and beautiful life through organizing by restoring harmony in their homes was a risk that has been so worthwhile. It’s changed my life in ways I could never have dreamed of.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am an Organizing Expert and Interior Stylist/Decorator based in the metropolitan Washington DC area. We service the DMV and travel to other states as well when called upon. We specialize in whole home decluttering and organization, relocation/move management services, and occasionally home decorating and styling. We take pride in being a judgment-free company. We love transforming any space in the home and devising creative storage solutions to help our clients maximize their spaces. We advise our clients on the optimal products to buy, space planning, and the overall transformation process. We are very consultative and empathic from the initial discovery call through the in-home/virtual consultation process where we assess the spaces and walk them through what to expect for our on-site work, to execution when we come into the home to transform the clients’ spaces.
– What sets us apart and what we are known for is our personal, one- on-one approach when working with our clients. I am closely engaged throughout the process from initial consultation until the project completion- and beyond actually for maintenance and subsequent changes. I love incorporating styling into our process especially when organizing closets. Naturally I am an empathic and a visual creative, so it’s in my default disposition to give my clients a personal custom experience. As a visual creative, I like color, patterns, and textures showcasing the pretty and the unique. For example, when organizing closets, I love creating the feel and look of a boutique where I showcase the clients’ beautiful belongings -jewelry, shoes, bags, and other accessories. The everyday experience of getting dressed feels like shopping in a beautiful, custom boutique except in this case, it’s their very own.
I believe in incorporating these beautiful items into the organizing and style plan in which our clients have invested their hard-earned money. Additionally, we are known for restoring harmony, putting the puzzle pieces together in any space we work in. Our resulting harmony creates spatial cohesiveness and flow, so that the items we organize work well together in their respective spaces. I take pride in intently listening to what my clients need and prefer, provoking them to think creatively, and executing the shared vision above and beyond expectation.
– How did I get to where I am today business-wise and was it easy?
I have been blessed to be running a very successful organizing business for almost 4 years now. I am most proud of how far we’ve progressed in that short time, the team that I’ve built along the way and the amazing clients we have worked with every day. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has been worthwhile at every step of the way. The experiences and the challenges that made us stronger and wiser continue to be our driving force.
I am very passionate about helping others live a mindful, clutter free life. I believe that our environment shapes who we are. Our homes are our very own personal sanctuaries where we should feel safe, loved and at peace. It is very important to create a peaceful home environment that helps us thrive and rebalance- a place of comfort and a home free of clutter that fuels our productivity.
I have been able to overcome my challenges by not sweating the small stuff, knowing that when things don’t go the way we want them to, having faith that the timing will eventually align. What is for me will not pass me when the time is right. I have a strong faith, a commitment to perseverance and grit, a dedication to learning and optimizing service to my amazing clients.
What I’d like the world to know about me and my brand is that I am them. I understand work-life balance and the challenges of maintaining it. Before anything, I am a mother, a business owner who understands the pulls of a busy life and the stresses associated with juggling all of its components. For these reasons, I am dedicated to helping other busy families and individuals create beautiful peaceful, environments through organizing and interior styling.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man this is a tough one. I am such a homebody and a brunch girl at the most. I would say I am blessed to live near our Nation’s capital, Washington D.C, so there is so much to see and do around the city. From the museums, unique dining experiences, shopping malls etc. One of my favorite areas to hang out, shop and eat is Georgetown in DC. There is always lots happening and with its waterfront proximity, boutique stores, historic homes, one can absorb a variety of experiences in an abbreviated time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My amazing family and village for their love, support and encouragement as I continue to build and grow my business. Most importantly I want to give the biggest shout out to my life partner and best friend, my husband Greshaun for his unwavering love and support always, in all ways. He supports me unconditionally, prays with me, prays over me, prays and for me. He encourages me to push through my fears and doubts and provides a perspective that is at times wider than the aperture through which I may be seeing a situation.
