We had the good fortune of connecting with Maestro Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maestro, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
Presently, I’m a parent of three beautiful ‘mini-me’s’. The most important thing I’ve done as a for them (in collaboration with their mom) is create an environment of complete safety- where they are free to express and communicate their feelings and emotions. I grew up in a culture where you didn’t question your parents (or any grown up for that matter). It created a wall that was rooted in fear of getting in trouble for “back-talking”. The way to really know what your kids are feeling and thinking is to create an environment where they feel safe enough to express them.

 

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My creativity endeavors steered behind the drum kit. I often refer to the drums (and music in general) as a portal of sorts. I put my all into it, and once many of those dreams became reality, new dreams were formed. The challenges had a lot to do with juggling so many interests and goals-on top of making sure regular bills were taken care of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA has so many places!!! If this person has never been to the area before, I’d first ask THEM what type of adventure they’d like to have. If they want to keep things “beachy”, we’ll have a plan to visit many of my favorite beaches! Or if they want to do a theme park tour, we’ll hit Universal Studios, DisneyLand, Six Flags, and maybe Knotts Berry Farm with some amazing food options in between. Or if they want the tourist vibes, Hollywood and Highland will be calling our names! The good times will be unlimited!
