We had the good fortune of connecting with Madeline Wray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madeline, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want my legacy to be about the change I brought to my community and hopefully the world. I am promoting healthy natural hair and I want women (especially of color) to embrace their hair’s natural state, their beautiful curls. I find it so beautiful when I share my passion with my clients and for it to show in my work. I love showing them the potential they have and ways to care for their hair inbetween appointments for the most surprising results! I hate to hear people say they don’t have that “good stuff”, when in fact, their curls are absolutely flawless!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is the love and passion I have for what I do. Most hairstylist do their “job” but I don’t believe in chemicals or anything that may potentially harm your hair. I want to talk you through the whole process of managing your hair. That is why I opened my salon, so I can sale products that I know will help their natural hair. I pride myself on working with my clients in any fashion, if it may be payments, timing, or place, to ensure they get their natural hair as healthy as possible. I am where I am today because of the talent God gifted me with and my love for hair. I genuinely love doing hair and I really love seeing the hair grow and become healthy over time, but my favorite part is the reaction I get from my clients after they see the difference! That is what pushed me to really step out of my comfort zone, which was my biggest problem initially.
I have learned many lessons, and honestly, everyday is a new day and there is always so much more to be learned. That is the biggest lesson I had to learn for myself, that you can only fail if you never try. That everyone had to start somewhere, so if you want something, just start one day by reading a book, searching information for any particular subject, just take the curiosity you may have and find the answers to any questions you may have, and see what you find out. I realized that the impossible was very possible and actually easier than I had told myself for so long!
I would want the world to know that Niks Beauty was created out of love and passion for my clients, in return, the universe gave the same love back in many ways!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to eat so my favorite local restaurants would be Campestre, a Mexican restaurant that is top quality! I love the staff and the food is amazing! We also have a park called Pipstem, they offer so many activities, from entertainment, food, and massages. They also offer outdoor activities like horseback riding and archery. But my favorite is the drive-in movie theatre! We also have a local bar presently known as ‘Big Back’ that has amazing food and fun activities like ax throwing! I also love ‘Fish Frenzy’ , very delicious, I love everything on their menu! I live by the city park, and they have several trails that you can take walks on through the woods. I love the outdoors!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It will have to go to my women of color! I love my black women and everything they represent. So to be able to do what I love and pour all that love into my work has allowed me to shed light on the beauty that comes so natural to them.
