We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddisen Morden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maddisen, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Not giving up. This is the ten year anniversary of Personify and we’ve had many iterations of the business since we started in 2014. There’s so many ups and downs of owning a small business. Really high highs and really low lows. You have to ride the wave and you just have to be determined to not give up. I’m thankful for it all… I think ultimately the difficult times make your business better.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think people have come to love and trust Personify because we carry really unique things in our stores. I am constantly looking for items for the store that you can’t find elsewhere. We think your style and the things you buy should be a reflection of your unique self. It should bring joy to you when you wear it, see it in your home, or gift it to loved ones. You don’t see yourself coming in a Personify outfit. Every day people tell me they get tons of compliments in their Personify clothes. That brings a smile to my face. We always say we aim for Personify to be a bright spot in your day; whether that’s shopping in one of our locations, shopping on the website, receiving a Personify package in the mail, or just interacting with us on socials! Shopping can still be an experience that brings us joy. It doesn’t have to be so transactional.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since we have stores in both downtown Duluth and downtown Chamblee I’d probably take them on a tour of both places! We call both of our locations “neighborhood stores” because we want to serve residents who actually live in these areas along with other local small businesses. We have always resisted going into a mall situation. We’d probably start in Downtown Duluth and visit all the lovely small businesses there. We’d head to the Chamblee area and stop at My Favorite Place and peruse their antiques. Then head to the little downtown and walk around in downtown Chamblee.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom of course! We started this together and are still running it together. Many people cautioned us before we started about having a “family business” but I can’t imagine doing this with anyone else. We complement each other well.
