We had the good fortune of connecting with MACS and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MACS, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are ultimately what got me where I am today, and no they weren’t always “calculated.” The most impulsive risks have garnered the most fascinating results, but not in this dolla dolla bills y’all way. It was more like gaining true knowledge of who I am and why I’m here. The biggest risk I took was moving to California. I had been on a plane once in my life and knew noone. But hat one single risk change my life, my art, my heart, and most importantly my mind.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
They say it’s all been done, but not my way. I’m the light and the dark and that’s what my music represents. It’s a true expression of my beauty and my pain. I grew up singing. And when you sing, you feel like a flower, so dainty and delicate. You feel like water and you can really represent beauty in its essence. It’s captivated people so I loved my soul and rhythm and blues.

When I became an adult, life punched me in the face the way it does everyone. That’s when I felt my petals start to droop and thorns began to grow. That’s when I tapped into lyricism and hip hop. It was such a raw way to express my anger or frustration or ego even. It was full of fire. For so long I battled with only showing one side of myself, the good. But it felt fake and unfulfilled. The enemy in me called me an imposter for rapping. But how is that so when it’s apart of me? Both are apart of me. So that’s what I went with. Giving people a chance to tap into both sides of me and my music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man. I never want to do the same thing twice. Forget a hookah lounge or the park. You trying to go sky diving? I don’t know what it is about new experiences. They’re scary but satisfying. If it were up to me we would go to the airport and buy the next flight leaving. We’d take a week and just explore. The most interesting people are the ones who can teach you about their experiences, ones that you’ve never had. That’s how I’ve continued to grow and stay happy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All credit is due to my mom and my dad for more obvious reasons than them giving birth to me, ha. I’m not going to lie, I went through this phase where I completely isolated myself from the world. I had become so obsessed with my music, my vision and trying to “break through” within myself. It was something I had to do alone and the people I had around me slowly started to disappear. That’s when my parents really stepped in and became my cheerleaders, my therapists, my best friends. They were the ones who listened to my newly written songs, and fed into countless hours of me talking about my vision. It seems to me that we all return to where we are born
