We had the good fortune of connecting with Lyric Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lyric, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Beyond The Shade when I became a mentor to a young lady. She was ending a breakup and the person she was dating made a comment about her intimate parts and PH balance, which in turn started an open conversation with me. To my surprise this young lady, at 21 had never been to a doctor. This started my wheels turning because how many other young black women didn’t know about their bodies. I then did a bit of research and found there was a lane for education in this field. So I contacted Dr. Jay Watts and enrolled in her school The Center for Empowered Sexual Wellness, LLC and became a Certified Sexologist and Sex and Relationship Coach. This experience has really changed my community and I have been able not only to educate but change the dynamic of Louisville, KY and surrounding areas in the sex education and exploration market.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Beyond The Shade is a bit taboo, exciting, educational and a space to explore. I create spaces to explore sexuality and also learn about Sexual Health and Wellness. What sets us apart from others is we want to be a brand that represents all races, all sexes, all ages in the education of Sexual Health. With a focus in the taboo subject of BDSM, which can have a bad reputation, I strive to educate the masses. This process was no easy one, I come from little big town where Sex is just simply not talked about. So coming out as a Sexologist you could imagine, no one took me seriously. I continuously have to show and speak and be upfront when it comes to being a LGBTQ black woman in this industry. I have to be a positive representation of BDSM and continually educate. I reached out to mentors to really help me along the way, because we are only as good as our team. What I have learned is no matter what KEEP GOING. There will always be people who cant see the vision but the vision was given to you to and you only. GET A TEAM. Know the business side of it, and of you don’t find someone who does.
What I am most proud of was last year we were able to test over 70 young people for HIV. I am also proud to have created a community of people who care about sexual health and now have the freedom to explore.

What I want people to know about me and my brand is Beyond The Shade cares. I understand the importance of health in our communities. I also understand and appreciate the importance of pleasure, love and relationships. I mean, it is what keeps the world going around. We are a safer space for you to simply be you. Be educated, Be loved, Be respected, and have a ton of fun while doing so!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots are outdoors, so of course Piedmont Park and Centennial Park. For The Culture check out THE TRAP MUSEUM..one of my favorite places to go. I would also say check out Chops Lobster for fine dining and Views Bar if you want to party and have a few drinks! Love Love Love Sundays at Rum Punch Brunch and get you a little Reggae Feel. Of course you cant forget the Aquarium.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Dr. Jay Watts (Jay The Loveologist) for being such a bright light and mentor in my career. She has worked with me on making me become a Certified Sexologist, as well as helping me further my career in this field. She truly is an inspiration and I respect and look up to her so much in this industry.
