We had the good fortune of connecting with Luz Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luz, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am Taino decent born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Growing up in a Puerto Rican household it always felt very special to me. House full of music, warmth, amazing food, laughter, dancing, but most importantly the love- sometimes tough love but the love was unconditional. Both my parents instilled in my siblings and I hardwork and pride. To be proud of our culture, to be proud of our language and our beliefs. My parents had financial struggles but I never saw it or felt it. They both worked two jobs, sometimes one may have a third but it was home cooked meals on the table everyday. We had our weekend lake cookouts. They made “life” look easy.
I was raised Catholic but practiced spirituality more than anything. I remember being like six or seven and watching my mother place a glass of water behind the front door with some Florida Water and Camphor. She will say to me that’s to keep away any negativity or bad spirits. I come from a family of spiritualist and healers. I’ve always honored my ancestors and the Orishas. My grandmother always had her lottery tickets underneath her Native American (Indio) statue. It was always a pleasure to watch her smile as she spoke of affirmations and manifestations words to her Indian. My grandfather was a Babalawo priest of IFA, a divination system with its roots in ancestral homeland of Yoruba. So because of this the spiritual realm was always in my blood and life. I’ve been reading tarot cards since the age of fifteen. I continued the path of my ancestors.
As I got older I incorporated holistic healing practices as well, gaining my Reiki certifications in 2002 and Sound Therapy Tuning Forks certification in 2003. Along this journey I relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina and established Luz’s Spiritual Corner, LLC. It was a calling to do what my ancestors did. My upbringing and my beautiful culture propelled me to show the world how beautiful this gift (that I was gifted) is. To walk in love and light and to share this with those that needs it the most has been a humbling experience. To make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s just one person I feel I’m doing my duty.
I would not change who and where I came from as this life has been good to me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My “work” is one of the less traveled roads but one of the most rewarding ones. I honestly could not see my self doing anything else. Every word that I speak, every item that I sell or any consultation I provide is always from the heart. My goal is to leave you better than you were before our meeting. Whether it’s a tarot reading that provides clarity to you, or my spiritual baths to help remove the unwanted heavy energies off you, or going to your place of business and/or home to spiritually cleanse my work is always done with love and compassion.
I think what sets me apart from others is “me”. There’s only one of me, I’m here for a purpose and I’ve been living in my truth. I’m most proud of my clients healing. It’s hard to remain hopeful and faithful when you feel the walls are caving in. It’s difficult to remain in a happy place when you feel lost, so I must say they are the ones I’m most proud of.
The lessons I’ve learned is that life isn’t always easy and it’s definitely isn’t fair. Some people will judge you without truly knowing you. Times may be hard but when you know you have the blood of your ancestors running through your veins it gives you the strength needed to push through the most difficult of times. I always give thanks to God, my parents, my ancestors and of course the Orishas for my blessings and where I am today. I am extremely blessed to be able to do what I love to do and make it a profession. They say if you love what you’re doing ,you never have to work a day in your life. I believe that wholeheartedly.
What I would like the world to know about me, my story and my brand is good people do exist. Energy, vibration and frequency are all real. We can heal. We can live our most abundant life. We can manifest our dreams. No we’re not perfect but we weren’t meant to be. Don’t put that kind of pressure on yourself. Enjoy this life. Live life to the fullest!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Charlotte has so many exciting events and places to go to. I love to eat so we’re definitely hitting a spot somewhere in South End. Leroy Fox South End has delicious drinks and food. I like their chicken wings and mac n cheese. Top Gulf is always a good time as they have several finger foods to choose from. I will check to see which comedians are showcasing at Comedy Zone because laughing is good for the soul.
We can’t forget shopping so Charlotte Outlets always has good deals. After shopping and eating it’s back to the crib to play a hand of dominoes, trash talking is a must!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first shoutout will have to be my mother and father., as without them I wouldn’t be who I am today. I appreciate their dedication and hard-work on raising four hot blooded misfits. We had a lovely home as our shelter, delicious food on our table and warm beds to jump into every night. It’s not enough time and money in this world to repay them for my life, but I will continue to show them love and shower them with hugs and kisses until my last breath.
My second shoutout will have to be my husband and children. Without their love and support this thing called “life” wouldn’t be as rewarding .Their patience with having to share me with the world is unmatched. They understand my busy days and my destiny. My inspiration and strength will always come from them.
Last but not least, my spiritual family, my god father aka Baba John aka Juan Machin and my spiritual sister Iya Tanya Lawson for their knowledge, support, loyalty, love and protection. To my ancestors and Omo Chango for the blessings and Ase’!
