Meet Luis Roque | Filmmaker and Sports Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Roque and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luis, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued this kind of career because I am an imaginative and adventurous person who loves to try new things. I have never seen myself doing a type of career that is just doing the same thing every day. You see this translated into my work as I don’t like repeating the same things over and over again. I challenge myself to push my limits and go that extra mile to create something I haven’t done before. That’s how you grow as a creator.
As a kid growing up, I watched films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Harry Potter, and I greatly appreciate the everlasting emotional impact it has left onto me. The skill and ability to create something that can emotionally connect and resonate with your audience is something that is immensely fulfilling to me, which is one of the biggest factors for me wanting to pursue this career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being still so early into my career, as I just graduated college just over a year ago, I am excited for everything that potentially lies ahead of me. I have been able to work on some pretty cool short films and was also lucky enough to be selected as an intern on a unionized feature film. Lately, I have been getting more into sports videography. As someone who loves film and also sports, it started to influence my work as I love blending storytelling and with what’s happening during a sporting event.
I still have much to learn and to experience which is where these challenges lie. Like I said beforehand, I love trying new things. I have learned to overcome them by still keeping my goals in sight and steady on my path. If I fail one day, I try to remind myself that I am still young and learning, and tomorrow will be a brand new day. Take a break, enjoy life, stay true to yourself, and believe everything will work out just fine.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hopefully when my best friend is visiting, there will be an Atlanta United game that week. That is a must do for this city if you love sports and even if you are just an adrenaline junkie. I have taken numerous family and friends, and it has always been a positive experience no matter if the team wins or loses. Next we can either go up to north Georgia and do some hiking or we can stay local to check out some areas like Piedmont Park or the Georgia Aquarium. Maybe even check out a movie at Plaza Theatre. For food, I will definitely be suggesting to stop at Fellini’s pizza.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It is very difficult to bottle down the reason of my success and where I am in life to just a single person. I am a firm believer that you are a product of your environment and the people you surround yourself with is a key contributor to where you end up in life. There has been many people that I have graciously been able to work with so it is tough to leave most people out. Firstly, I obviously would like to shoutout my family and girlfriend for supporting everything I do. They bought me my first camera, paid for school, and helped me with anything I needed. Next I would say all the students and professors at the University of West Georgia that helped grow my skills and also gave me a strong support system that I will never ever take for granted. Paul Adebajo and Keyshawn Chism were one of the first film students I met at that college and they are my friends that I still work with to this day.
