We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Shivley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Maybe it sounds cliché, but I have to credit hard work, dedication, and perseverance for all of my success. There were many sleepless nights involved. There were times I wanted to throw in the towel and give up. What kept me going is the vision I have of who I wanted to become and what I wanted to be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Becoming an Aesthetician was my dream career before I even knew I could make a career of it. I started playing in makeup around age 12, filmed my first makeup tutorial by 14. I didn’t realize I would become so passionate about skincare until I started an aesthetic program. Like most people, I came from a family who wanted to see me take the traditional college route. I knew that path wasn’t for me and I faced a lot of push back for that at the time. My parents didn’t attend university and that was always a major regret for them.
It’s a conflicting feeling when you know what’s best for yourself but other people think they know what’s better for you. It took a lot of self-assurance to know I was choosing the right path for me. When I was in aesthetics school, there were some days I’d come home in tears and other days I’d study 4 hours straight. I learned not to sweat the small stuff and focus on my end goal. I began to accept the fact that not everyone will like me, I’m not built to ace every exam, and mistakes have to happen in order to grow.
I didn’t always know what path I wanted to take, but I did know where I wanted to end up. What I preach most is perseverance; you haven’t failed until you’ve given up.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d start off with a day full of fun in downtown Alpharetta. There are a ton of local shops and restaurants, super walkable. Breakfast to start at Maple Street Biscuit Co., then enjoy a leisurely walk while hunting for live music. There’s always a variety of fun, flashy cars to admire in that area.
Following, we’d have dinner at my absolute favorite restaurant in the city, Canoe. There we’d enjoy a couple refreshments and peppercorn crusted kangaroo along with their slow braised rabbit.
In the following days we’d visit the Porsche Experience Center for a simulated experience and walk Piedmont Park. One evening we’d enjoy the SkyView Ferris wheel accompanied by dinner at The Sun Dial for the absolute best view in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, my fiancé has played a strong hand in helping me build my career. From day one he supported my dreams and has helped me find a way to execute my vision. I was actually living in Chattanooga, TN when I met him. From there he helped me move to Atlanta, enroll in an Aesthetics program, and find an apartment nearby. He has always believed in me, even in the moments when I didn’t quite believe in myself. Without his unconditional love and support, I wouldn’t be half the woman I am today.
Beyond that, the book You are a Badass® is one I’ve read twice over. It taught me how to face life’s obstacles and obtain the things I desire. It’s a book I genuinely feel anyone can benefit from. It’s a self-help book that gave me the extra push I didn’t know I needed.
