We had the good fortune of connecting with Liv Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liv, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I first started, I was obsessed with my work. Looking back at it, I prioritized my school and artwork above most other things in my life. Not too long ago, I saw how that was affecting not only my mental health but also my relationships, especially friendships. Without realizing it, I was missing out on opportunities and memories with friends and even a career point. It’s been a hard journey, but having a healthy balance between outside life and work makes all the difference. I’ve now put a higher priority on spending quality time with those who are important around me and I’ve noticed a huge jump in my mood, stress levels, and even my physical health. I’ve been overall a happier person, and by changing my balance of priorities, I’ve been able to have more ideas, inspirations, and great connections with my peers. Work isn’t everything and for me, it was really hard to see that in the beginning. I think it’s crucial to show how much you value your connections, especially when just starting in the creative field

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is primarily under the publication illustration and design route. I tend to focus on editorial and advertisement pieces. My work falls under the subjects of sustainability, feminity, and botanical works. I take heavy inspiration from early printmakers and art nouveau. I’ve been told that my art has a light airy feel to it and that people have a sense of calmness when they look at my work! I think what I’m most excited about is that I am just dipping my toes into my career, I have so much to learn, expand, and grow upon not only in my art but as myself as an individual. There are so many opportunities in front of me that I am beyond thrilled to dive headfirst into! It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today, and there will still be bumps in the road later on, but I am proud of myself for where I am standing today. I learned to have your connections and friends close, and to be supportive among your peers, as they’ll be there for you in return when you need it the most. I want the world to know that I am a kind and sympathetic person, that I love seeing the success of others that I care about, and that my story is just beginning.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Savannah, GA and I wanted to show them around, I would start by taking them to E. Shavers, one of my favorite bookstores! I love going there to browse, get inspiration, and of course, see the cats there! I would also take them to a handful of coffee shops, Savannah has a wonderful coffee scene! If we had to pick one, I’d make sure we’d stop at Cup to Cup cafe, I may be a little biased but I think they have the best coffee in town! I’d make sure we’d be able to visit all of the museums and historic sites operated by the Telfair Museum, everything they do is wonderful! I’d take us to the farmers market that happens every Saturday afternoon at Forsyth Park and stop by my favorite vendor Troupial! Majo, the owner makes some of the best food and Venezuelan pastries I’ve ever had! You can’t miss it! I’d also make sure we’d go to Starland Yard and have a drink or two at Two Tides Brewery! Their sours are the best I’ve had and is one of my overall favorite spots to hangout, chill, and drink & draw with friends!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who I look up to and can’t thank enough for where I am in my career path. If I had to narrow it down. I wouldn’t be able to feel confident in my work if it wasn’t for my professor and mentor Mike Wimmer. He has been a professor I’ve been able to confine in with my creative work and professional career. I’ve been able to get fantastic feedback on how to pursue the goals that I want. The first class I had with him, I remember not being as confident with my abilities and work compared to my peers. He made me feel that my work had potential and was able to make myself see that as well. He’s been someone I’m able to go back to for advice and self-promotion. Professor Wimmer was also someone who was very understanding and helpful when unexpected life changes happened, and even if he didn’t realize it, helped me keep afloat during that rough patch. I also would like to thank my close circle of friends I have made in my time at school, they have encouraged and motivated me to keep pushing my work to its full potential and I can’t wait to be fully emersed in my career knowing that I have their support!
