We had the good fortune of connecting with Lincoln Hoppe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lincoln, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My co-founder (Eric) and I had been teaching improv for years, and we kept running into people who weren’t able to take Los Angeles quality Improv Classes from other cities and states. Because of the fact that learning and doing improv changed both of our lives and greatly improved our acting careers, we wanted to share that with more people. So we started doing Video on Demand and Zoom improv training several years before Covid through ImprovWizards.com Several people told us it couldn’t be done, but we did it anyway, with great success for our students. Then covid hit, and then everyone was taking improv classes online.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For actors, improvisation is an essential skill on set, as well as in auditions, and even while preparing for a role. We ran into so many people who wanted to learn and practice these creative skills who had no class near them, or only a book to read and learn with. So we created an online improv learning system to learn those skills, and be able to practice and refine them.
So many people told us, “you can’t teach improv online!” But we did it anyway. And we had so many students who were able to learn not only the basics, but a lot of advanced skills and techniques as well.
And then guess what happened?! Covid hit, and all the major schools who told us it couldn’t be done, learned very quickly that not only could you learn improv online, but you could isolate the skills in many ways better than an in-person improv class.
We had a goal when the world told us it wasn’t possible! And we have the results to prove it.
Now most big schools have gone back to in-person-only classes, while we still offer these creative skills and building blocks through classes online that you can join from anywhere in the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Atlanta BeltLine is my favorite place to go in Atlanta. I spent all my free time there on my last film shooting in Atlanta. Highly recommended! All kinds of foods, shops, and great for exercise!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our phenomenal improv students at ImprovWizards.com who are continuously surprising us with their creativity, wit, and imaginations!
