We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lex, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started acrylic pour painting as a hobby and once my first painting sold to a complete stranger, I knew this was it. This was the start of my business. I moved to Georgia around four years ago with a plan that ultimately fell through. I worked various retail and restaurant jobs to survive, but I didn’t have a clear direction for my life. Thankfully, I transformed my mindset after hiring an online life and fitness coach. This year, I made the terrifying decision to leave my salaried manager position and pursue my passions to the fullest. I haven’t looked back since.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started fluid pour painting around three years ago. I had entered a new relationship and was smothering the poor guy. I needed a hobby. I saw one of Callen Schaub’s posts on Instagram and immediately started watching pour art tutorials. I went to an art supply store the next day, dropped a hundred dollars, and made my first pour painting. Over the years, I’ve experimented with layering different techniques and using multiple types of paints all within one painting. Along with my unique color combinations, my art definitely stands out in a crowd.
Currently, I still have a day job. I waitress four days a week to guarantee my rent is paid, but I’m hoping to make the transition to full time artist within the next six months. The hardest part of my journey was showing up consistently on social media. I’m incredibly thankful to all my supporters, especially my real life friends and family, but also to the loyal followers I’ve had since the beginning. I’m most excited about the future. I spent a majority of my life battling suicidal thoughts and depression so art has been therapeutic for me. I’ll be launching my life coaching program next year, so between that and art, I can’t wait to see what I get into next.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a self-identified huge nerd, I love visiting My Parents’ Basement and Battle and Brew. Battle and Brew is a nerd’s paradise, with computers everywhere and plenty of video game consoles, plus great food. If I had a friend visiting I would for sure take them there. My favorite tourist spots are the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and Six Flags. A family-friendly place I recommend is Main Event because they have bowling, laser tag, and a huge arcade. In the summer I always hit the Georgia Renaissance Festival, located in Fairburn. I’m a huge haunted house fanatic, so in October I recommend Netherworld and Folklore Haunted House. For my witchy friends, I love Phoenix & Dragon Bookstore in Atlanta and Margo Metaphysical in Athens. In the Norcross area, I enjoy walking around Historic Norcross, especially to look at Christmas lights, and for my skaters, I recommend Pinckney Skatepark.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely. I wouldn’t be where I am right now without the help of my coach and mentor, Bonnie Patterson. @coachbons
I also need to shout out my mentor, Liz Duncan. Thank you ladies for being lights in my life and inspiring me to be a light in others.
