We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Boles Muhammad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned from being a business owner is that you cannot pursue great things on your own. Because we empower words like “grinding” or “hustling” so much in our culture, it gives the misconception that you can create great things by yourself as long as you “grind” or “hustle hard”. But the reality is, it does the exact opposite. It creates an illusion that is essentially glazed in selfishness. Identifying a partner or a resources that can assist you with scaling or growing your business does more than just put more money in your pocket, it creates opportunities for those coming up behind you or with you, Legacy. My business partner and I have developed a system for our business, Revu Healthcare, that has had a huge impact on our success. Where I lack, she excels and where she lacks, I excel. To be very honest, Revu Healthcare wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our equal commitment to the vision behind Revu. The most successful businesses are generally backed by a strong team, so if you have a really big vision, be open to partnerships or collabs. Trust me, I know.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Revu Healthcare (RH) LLC is a minority owned healthcare consulting firm offering comprehensive regulatory compliance solutions and revenue cycle/integrity support to healthcare providers, hospitals, health systems, physician groups, and other healthcare entities. The idea of Revu was conceptualized when my partner and I were working in the Compliance department at a medium size non-profit hospital in New Jersey. During that time we encountered very few women of colour in executive and mentorship roles in the Healthcare compliance world. With that in mind, we set out to create an organization that will not only create and build wealth but will be a beacon of hope to young minority individuals, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds who will have little or no prospect to break into a highly specialized industry like healthcare compliance.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favourite thing to do is EAT! So I would create an itinerary of restaurants for us to try all over the city. I am the type of person that would fly to Italy for pizza, France for croissants and Maine for lobster.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had so many great people and mentors impact my life in a major way but the one person in particular that deserves a shoutout in my story is my Dad, Vern Boles. My father really taught me the importance of remaining humble and giving back. No matter how far he went in life, he always was grateful for what he had, even if he wasn’t where he wanted to be and would give the shirt off his back to help others.
The other thing he taught me how to do in life is Laugh! He is a low-key comedian and enjoyed just seeing other people smile. Although these things may seem small, they really are the keys to my success.
