Meet Laura Wang | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to taking risks in my career and my life, there are a few that come to mind. I had to move to Austin, Texas from the state I was living in for personal reasons and that was a BIG risk for me; I knew that it could potentially be a productive move considering Austin is one of the most creative cities but I wasn’t sure I had it in me to put in the work to network. After some time there I met several amazing people who took me into their circle and guided me into all these opportunities – the biggest thing for me was making sure I was OPEN to saying yes to all of them. Another risk that instantly comes to mind is that I recently went full -time with my photography; I took a job offer, and jumped in feet first. I quit my retail job probably sooner than I should have but I knew that I had no other choice and that I had to go all in.
Those two things are what I’ve learned when it comes to risks – how much work are you willing to put in to make sure it works out? And are you willing to take on all the opportunities you can? That is how you end up being successful in your leap of faith. That, and making sure that you believe in yourself and what you can do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe the thing that sets me apart from others is how personable I am and my versatility. What I love about photography is that every job is different and I can go into any type while holding my professional stature but also making my subjects feel comfortable. I also do many different types of photography – weddings, engagements, portraiture, travel, or families. I try not to stretch myself out too much, but I just love it all. I’m proud of where I am today, and I’m excited for the next couple of years as I navigate being a full-time photographer!
As far as my journey, it has definitely been a long road. In order to make ends meet I was working in other jobs while doing photography on the side. I was also going to school for professional photography, so I was learning everything I could in the mean time. This was a challenge when it comes to time management and how much energy I had every week to put towards photography, but I pushed through until I finally could make wedding photography my full time job. It wasn’t easy, but my passion for my work made it possible to overcome the challenges and it has been so rewarding.
If there’s anything I wanted the world to know about my brand and story, it’s that I am hardworking and will continue to try to make a place for myself and other artists. I’m still learning, and striving to be the best I can be.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hm, a fun itinerary for the best time ever.. Hiking would definitely be on the list. I’ve hiked all over Georgia and some of the surrounding states with my boyfriend, so that’s the first thing. I’m half Chinese, so I love Asian food; we would definitely eat on Buford highway and while we were there I would get us Boba tea from Pearls. Atlanta has some really fun bars and brunch places so we could make a day out of that too! We could have a little picnic and photoshoot at Piedmont park too!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friend Jai’, she is a model and private esthetician. She does great work in both fields, and is opening her own esthetician business! Her instagram is @tahjaitj and her company is @ritzyretreat.
Also, my cousin Jordan Burgess. Instagram @jordaneburgess. She has inspired me to fully put myself into my career.
