We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Luk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In the beginning, for me – it was simple. I loved decorating cookies and I sought out more opportunities to make them for people. The business formed organically through word of mouth and social media.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a creative person – growing up always gravitating to artistic ventures and creative tasks. I’d say my biggest challenge was feeling like I had to follow a certain path – I went to a liberal arts college and worked in corporate HR for over a decade. I was good at my job and appreciated the comfort it provided, but I never felt excited about what I was doing. I always dreamt of a time in my life where I’d be able to fill my days doing something I loved. I never thought I’d find that thing when I had two kids under age 3 – or during a global pandemic – but I followed a calling and have never stopped. I’ve learned a ton – but mostly – that to get to where you want to be, you need to have support. I am lucky enough to have support at home, but I’d encourage folks who want to have a business to find support from someone who will really be there for you – because none of us can (or should) do it alone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For me, it’s all about the food. I went to Emory so the original Alon’s holds a special place in my heart. A croissant and coffee is my ideal breakfast. Lunch could be al fresco at Le Bilboquet and dinner has to be at Lyla Lila which is one of the best restaurants in the city, in my opinion.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The inspiration and admiration I held for other cookie artists I saw doing such amazing things on social media made my aspirations for having a real business in custom cookies possible. I want to dedicate my shoutout to them for showing me that this can be done!
