Meet LaToya Nicole Fletcher | Plus Size Model, Makeup Artist, and College Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with LaToya Nicole Fletcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaToya Nicole, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
As a Makeup Artist and a Published Plus Size Model, I owe all of my creativity for my professions and skill sets to God. God told me back in 2017 to create a non-profit component to my established Makeup Artistry Company called “Beauty Slays.” With Beauty Slays, I along with some other very anointed and talented creatives lend our talents and time to those afflicted with Breast Cancer, Heart Disease, and Lupus. Those 3-5 individuals that are selected winners during the awareness month celebrating their lives are blessed with a complimentary make over including Hairstyling, Fashion Styling, Makeup Artistry, and a Complimentary Photo Session.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Published Plus Size Model, it wasn’t always easy to get where I am today. I have over 20 years of experience in the industry. With that came a lot of hard life lessons, good and bad experiences, and some teachable moments. I only stand at 5’3. So, when I started modeling professionally in 1999, there wasn’t a lot of opportunities for someone my height and body type. I was a Size 8, and a Size 8 is still considered Plus size. I was labeled as curvy and petite. I could only get some print jobs and mostly Pinup and Swimsuit calendar work. If I did do any runway back then, it was usually hair shows and urban fashion shows. However, with time, and pushing for barriers to be broken; times have changed for the better. We still have a ways to go, but the fashion industry has changed so much. Now, with more body positivity awareness and models on the forefront; a new and exciting day in the fashion industry has emerged. There are more opportunities now, and it warms my heart to hear of all of the numerous opportunities that are now available to the curvy, full figured,  plus size,  and petite communities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Six Flags of course! I am still a kid at heart. I love to frequent Sudos, Suite Food Lounge, and Little Spirit Night Clubs, Bars, and Lounges for some drinks and a relaxed good time. I love both Lennox Square Mall and Stone Mountain Malls because I am a notorious shopaholic. I love to visit the cool Bodies The Exhibition Museum and Candytopia Museum for some education and fun. Finally, I love the Goat Farm, Prime Time Studios, C Denim Live Studios, and Kroger Streets for the best photo shoot spots.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my Gorgeous big Sister, Terri Pollard of TerriCherri’s Unique Boutique for being a constant support system by constantly praying over me, guiding me, and loving me. I would love to shout out my big brothers Timothy Fletcher Sr , Wayne Gregory Fletcher, and Randy Fletcher for always looking out for me, loving me, and protecting me. I would love to shout out my Best friend, Shai’Vonne Webster for being a rock solid support system and for being a true friend when I need it the most. I would also love to shout out my friends Mo Hendon, Tangy Tannehill, my cousin Alesia Taylor, and friends Monique Moore and Vee Altovise for being there in a crutch and when times get hard. I would love to shout out my Photographers who have me looking spectacular and who offer their wisdom and entertainment industry advice; D Jerome Smedley, Erica Lashuwn Gooden, and José Pagãn. I would love to thank all of my family, friends, and clients who love and support me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of you playing a very intricate part of my journey.
