We had the good fortune of connecting with Latoya Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Latoya, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite affirmation is I AM A GENERATIONAL CURSE BREAKER! It means that past traumas and learned behaviors stopped with me and will not be passed down to my children. I like that I was able to identify that the things I thought were normal were truly passed down behaviors. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t fault my family, they could only give what they had to give and do what they knew how to do. We all know the saying, “when you know better, you do better!” So, because I have learned better, I am going to do better for my family. I have even taken it further to help women, I have an organization called Pretty Hurts that was birth to help women who have been a product of generational curses, along with being abandon, rape, molested and even abuse. My purpose is to equip, empower and encourage them that they are fearfully and wonderfully made and help them know that their past does not define them. My goal is to help them live a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Professionally I am a manager in the mortgage industry and Life Coach as well. Making it to where I am today was not easy at all! My mortgage career began as a Loss Mitigation Underwriter. I’m a person who has always been up for a challenge and yes, I had to overcome several of them along the way. I begin to get assigned special projects and even received an award for employee of the year. I started applying for leadership roles such as team lead, supervisor you name it. But continued to be denied for the positions for years. I had to overcome rejections something that was a trigger in my life and would stop me from going after things I desired. I had made up in my mind that delayed does not mean denied so I begin to work even harder, by changing my attitude and not giving up. I have learned that you are the only person that can stop you. once I self-reflected and worked on areas that God showed me, I needed to change I begin to see a difference in how I was being treated and I know I had the expertise and knowledge the entire time, but God wanted me to see myself differently. I want the world to know that you can do all things because that is what God promised you, and you don’t have to wear a mask to fit in because you are remarkably made. I want women to know that they can be their authentic selves no matter what you have gone through or experienced in life. I became a Life Coach to help others navigate and transition through life. I am Pretty Hurts, but I am so grateful to be Pretty Healed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to go out to eat and try different restaurants so we would definitely do breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner depending on what time we get up to get out. I love the sound of the ocean so we would go to the beach and watch the sunset because I am sure she wouldn’t want to get up with me to watch the first light and sunrise. lol…. I love all things inspirational so I would look for murals, or empowerment events being held in our city. Currently Van Gogh The Immersive Experience is here so that is definitely a place I would go. Shopping would definitely be on the itinerary, I love Fashion. We would end our week with church service, I love to worship, and I LOVE Jesus!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, I would like to give a shout to my husband Harlon Brown Sr. and children Harlon Brown Jr and H’ariah Brown who have supported me from day one. I also want to give a shoutout to Lady Camilla Nesbitt, thank you for recommending me for this interview, but really, she is a wonderful friend and mentor. She truly has a heart for God’s people she is patience, kind and a woman who is making an impact with anyone she comes in contact with. Thank you for answering the call to being my mentor. Thank you for helping change my mindset. Thank you for helping me grow. Thank you for being my cheerleader! Let me also shoutout my coaches, Coach D Nicole and Coach Mo, they keep me going even when I think it’s tough.
