We had the good fortune of connecting with Latefa Nicole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Latefa Nicole, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is necessary for advancing your career and living your life. I believe we often hinder ourselves because we’re afraid we will fail if we take the big risk. I’ve opened and closed a secondary location of my hair salon to open AtlWigEx .The area was just not an area where my ideal client resides. So I had to me a decision to protect my brand by closing it down. Some may look at it as a failure but it was an experience I needed to walk through. I learned what works and doesn’t work for what I’m developing. The key is to take calculated risks. Weigh the pros and cons before going through with them. If the benefits outweigh the possible cons, go for it!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m from Durham, North Carolina, also known as the Bull City. I love my hometown and am proud to be a native of the area. It is an emerging city that is growing to be a tech and research hotspot. My father passed when I was an infant so I was raised by my single mother. Her resilience and grit to get it done taught me that no matter what hand I’m given, I have to keep going. I’ve always had a hustle mentality. I ended up getting into the drug game and literally almost went to prison behind some charges. That’s when I decided I could use my hustle mentality for legit business endeavors. From that, I focused on doing hair. I now own a mobile wig truck called ATLWigEx here in Atlanta. I also own GlamShe & Co., a brick-and-mortar salon that is based in Durham, NC. I also sell bundles, wigs, and hair supplies through both businesses. This hasn’t been an easy journey, but it has been rewarding. Selling someone on your dream, especially when it is something different and out of the box, takes work. My mobile wig truck is innovative. I wanted to create a concierge experience for my clients. Sometimes going to the salon isn’t convenient, especially if you have a busy schedule. I also have a heart for those who struggle with their hair. This is a great alternative for those dealing with hair loss and alopecia that aren’t comfortable going into the hair salon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many places I love in Atlanta. Brunch at Kods on Sunday is a must. Shopping at Perimeter Mall will empty your pockets but fill your closet. I am all for the eats. As a self proclaimed foodie, I’ve tried many spots and have a list of others to evaluate. I thoroughly enjoy a good meal at VVS, Apt4b, St. Regis and Rays on the River. Whiskey Mattress is perfect for a night out. If you can, engaged with the black hair community. It’s just a different vibe here in the ATL.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my daughter, Jada. Everything I do is for you. I want you to know that you can have any and everything you want, if you’re willing to work for it. Nothing is outside of your reach.
