We had the good fortune of connecting with LaMarcus Cleveland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaMarcus, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process was building a legacy that would last when I’m no longer here on earth. Within this, being able to help people whether it be emotionally, financially, or changing someone’s living situation played a big part in starting my own business. In My Own Skin, LLC is all about building people in any and every facet in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The thing I’m most excited about is just seeing people wear my designs or see people’s faces light up when I’m able to help them find a home through the connections I have. This has been roughly a 2-3 year process but it has been worth the journey. I just had a good support system and team to help overcome the challenges. We always believe it’s going to happen just doesn’t have to be today, but keep on pushing and success will happen. I want the world to know no matter who you are , what you love, who you love, it doesn’t matter. As long as you are comfortable in your own skin, anything is possible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Probably would take them to slutty vegan, see Dr. King’s church, trap museum. But how me and my people hang we would probably get a cabin somewhere bbq, play some cards, drink some Coronas and just talk about our younger years. The most exciting people are the people that have been in your corner from day 1 that you met them.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wanna dedicate this to my mother Cheryl Cleveland who recently passed away in December of 2020 due to cancer. My mother is the reason why I was able to accept my flaws and be comfortable in my own skin as dealing with mental health issues in the black community isn’t always the easiest thing. But she showed me love and care even when nobody even knew what was going on with me but her. She literally saved my life and just was the greatest woman to ever walk this earth in my eyes.
