We had the good fortune of connecting with Lala Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lala, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal is not to fall under the statistics “Single young mother of two living off government assistant.” I want to wake up everyday doing what I love ART some days that’s me creating fashion other days that’s me doing arts & craft with my kids. And if I can create something beautiful , so that I can live a beautiful life with my beautiful kids ; well that would be just beautiful #futuremillionaire
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s not easy trying to be the best fashion designer, especially when you live for others. If I could spend all my money on fabric & practice all day I would. I’ve learn how to balance my life with passion & 2 kids . It gets hard because I don’t see anyone my age with kids trying to do what I do. So I wonder if it’s possible. My kids motivate me though, every time I make them something I imagine when they are 16 and I’m making a prom dress , or Halloween customs , & how they are going to brag that their mom made their clothes. I want the world to know that my brand isn’t just a brand but a club. I want to build relationship with the loyal people that supports my brand & meet devoted fashionable people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Louisville there some nice attractions to visit: Muhammad Ali center , the Louisville zoo, waterfront , Malibu Jack’s for kids , Drakes bar for adults , Omni hotel for luxury stay. But my favorite place to hang out & to just enjoy life would be Seneca park I get to go for a jog , take a leap in the lake , run around with my kids, enjoy a picnic under the sun & also do a little painting.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my Mother that is no longer here with me. But I can still feel her presence & her excitement. My mother always told me I was going to be America’s next top model. And I believed her. But one thing I noticed every model had in common was fashion. And I fell in love with the art & wanted to make my own. So I taught myself how to sew and model in my own clothes.
