We had the good fortune of connecting with Lakil Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lakil, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for art. My father and aunt were really great artist so I found myself often drawing, painting and partaking in arts and crafts when I was younger. In addition to art, I discovered I was creative in other ways such as writing, both critical and strategic thinking and communicating. Art is a form of storytelling. Art is admirable. Art appreciates in value. Even the most simplest form of art is appreciated. I pursued an artistic/creative career because my sole purpose in life is to inspire. I will to use my creativity to be an inspiration to all.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Faith without work is dead. My work ethic, dedication and consistency separates me from others. Just realizing my growth, both personally and professionally, throughout the process has been the most rewarding part. Being committed to my craft and teachable has helped me get to this point in my career. Of course, nothing worth having is easy. When pursuing your dreams or operating in your purpose, it is important for you to have patience and trust the process no matter how long it takes. The success will come as long as you work hard and put forth the effort. Keep pushing even when you think no one is watching. Your moment may arrive when you least expect it. As for me, I will become everything I strive to be. A friend of mine once told me that every great journey begins with a step. So, here is me taking that step and never looking back. Stay tuned!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Now we all know people travel to Atlanta JUST for the experience. The first place on my list is The Village Retail at Ponce City Market. If you have not been you are truly missing out! The Village Retail is a newly opened, black-owned storefront, created by the genius herself, Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon. Not only is this a curated shopping experience, but it currently features 29 local black-owned businesses. All unique, different and one-of-a-kind items you can not find anywhere else. So for anyone looking to shop and support all things black-owned, the Village Retail is a must! After shopping, I would even consider stopping by Bar Vegan for a nice meal and margarita. Or if you want prefer a nice light and healthy snack while you continue to stroll around the marketplace, check out the Lucky Lotus Juice Bar. Another staple in the city of Atlanta, is none other than Slutty Vegan. My friends can not leave Atlanta without trying it. And believe me, the hype you see on social media is REAL. The visit would not be complete without a day spa outing at IWI Fresh, a night of good vibes in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to give all thanks and glory to God ♥ No matter how self-motivated I am, I have to give credit to my family. They may not agree with all of the decisions I make but they always motivate me to strive for more. When I accomplish something, no matter how big or small it is, they always tend to ask me, “what’s next” They remind me to never get comfortable or be to complacent. For that reason, I strive to unlock full my potential. My small circle of friends also motivate and inspire me to push forward in my purpose. Throughout the years, I realized how important it is to build genuine relationships. I think it is very important for me to shoutout my mentor, and dear friend, Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon. As my former basketball coach to now serving as my mentor and working closely with her, she has been a true inspiration to me. She moves intentionally and is very passionate about family and the community-driven work that she does to fuel black entrepreneurship. To know her, is to love her wholeheartedly. She is a light that inspires many to operate in excellence.
