We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Hobson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success, truthfully, is the authenticity behind what I do. I don’t do it for the fame or notoriety or money, although all of that would be beautiful to have. I do the things I do because I love them. Every connection I’ve made, every person that I’ve helped, every poem that I’ve spoke, and every event I’ve hosted have come from genuine thought. My goal is never to be at the top alone, so I will do whatever I can to make sure that me and my people eat. I feel like what I do adds to that central goal.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been singing since I was 3 and playing instruments from as long as I could remember. I would act out scenarios, make up songs with my sister, write stories in a book, or act like I was a preacher. I have always been a creative and have always done creative things.
In 2017, I made my way to Morehouse College as a freshman where I was blessed with a plethora of opportunities to tap into my creative side. Coming in, I continued my photography side hustle that formed in high school, but quickly saw that it was a common trend in the AUC. I wanted to stand out as much as I could to be honest. After falling upon a pop-up open mic event, I realized poetry was my differentiation from everybody else. After that, I began to take poetry serious which allowed for me to tour up the east coast in areas such as Chicago, Louisiana, and Harlem to preform my poetry. Through Morehouse, I was given the opportunity to perform my poetry in collaboration with majors entities such as the Atlanta Hawks, Georgia Stand-Up, and more recently, TedX. I’ve gotten the chance to perform in front of names such as Vince Carter and Killer Mike, and have even gotten the chance to perform with Common on stage.
While at Morehouse, I was also put in tune with other creatives and from these connections, Sovereign Sounds was made. . Since its start, we have signed artists, done commercials, hosted game shows, have had constant content and media on our Youtube and Instagram and have hosted and sponsored various events. From all these connections, me being intertwined within the college community, and my various internship experiences, I got the opportunity to meet so many different people and, in a sense, interview them. I fell in love with conversation and the act of it, especially when the pandemic and social media stopped a lot of physical conversations from happening. I think thats what Im probably most proud of; being a vessel to where people can still have open, honest, safe, and clear conversation.
To be honest, speaking to so many people, genuinely caring, genuinely wanting to see everyone succeed and grow to the top with you, and trying to do what you can to help them is hard as hell sometimes. You still have a life to live too. But God gave me the gift to be able to connect and God blessed me with compassion, so that I am able to genuinely connect. Who am I to hold that back? Who knows what me speaking to them could do? In everything I write, speak, create, help, whatever it is. Whatever I do, I just wish to instill compassion, continue to provide opportunities for the next up, and whatever I do, make it art.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anytime I come to Atlanta, I’m visiting the AUC. That’s a must. I have to pay homage to to those before me, see what’s up with those after me, and I miss campus sometimes, so of course we would go there. Definitely would have to hit My Coffee Shop for breakfast and good conversation, and I definitely would have to stop at Sweetwater Creek.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off, I’d like to thank God because there’s been a lot of dark days and missed calls and he’s answered every one… or she? I don’t know. I definitely want to shoutout my mom because I do a lot of this with the goal of retiring her and to make her proud. Shoutout my siblings too. They were my first audience, my first teachers, and my first critics. Shoutout my homies Gordon and Jermaine for keeping me aligned when I may steer off. Also, shoutout to my biggest rival and best partner, Lunden, for he keeps my creative spark going when I may want to turn it off. Shoutout to people that support me, shoutout to people that hate me, and I give all love and praises to my ancestors before me.
