We had the good fortune of connecting with Kwajalyn Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kwajalyn, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In the beginning of my career, I was hyper-focused on achievement. Because of this, I unfortunately didn’t spend much down time with family or friends and reserved all of my free time for pursuing my career. Today, I’m still focused on my career, but I’ve learned that it’s important to have balance and to foster healthy relationships.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I jumped into the acting world about 13 years ago as an adult. Though I started a little later than some, I am most proud of the amount of opportunities I’ve been given to perform. I am where I am today not only because I’m kind of a workaholic, but also because of the love and support from my friends, family, agents and managers through the years. They always support and encourage me and I’m blessed to have them. This path has definitely not been easy. There have been disappointments with roles I didn’t get or frustrations with figuring out the work/life balance I mentioned earlier, but I was able to overcome these challenges by staying focused and continuing to believe in myself and my vision.
Believing in myself is also the biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way. While it’s important to have a great support system, none of it matters if I don’t believe in myself. I can sometimes be too hard on myself, but I’ve learned to give myself more grace and the permission to be human.
What I want the world to know about me is that I love humanity and I hope that my artistic contributions to the world help to elevate others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not really a club person, but I do love a nice lounge or restaurant with an upscale, but laid back vibe. A couple of places I like to frequent are The James Room or the Garden Room, both of which have great food and drinks.
I love being outdoors, so I usually like to hike Sweetwater Creek or Amicalola Falls.
For live music, you can’t beat City Winery!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been so many people that have helped me over the years, it’s difficult to point out just one or two. I’d like to thank everyone who has ever helped me with an audition or given me encouragement when things got tough. I’d also like to thank my agents and managers (past and present), as well as casting directors who gave me the chance to audition for – and work on – some very cool projects that allowed me to expand and grow as an artist.
I am eternally grateful to all.
