We had the good fortune of connecting with Koy Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Koy, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance has changed a lot since i decided i was going to pursue my music career. It used to be a lot more laid back, but i quickly realized that my 9-5 funds the music career. I work very long hours just to be able to buy beats, pay for videos, etc. but i think the balance is very important because you don’t want to be on the street you know? I still have a life and need to make sure that I’m okay. But i feel like when i get the traction and find my target audience i won’t have to worry about it as much
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Musically, what sets me apart is my creative process. The way i approach a beat, my precise flow switches, and my authentic rhyme schemes. My intention is to be as raw and organic as possible. I’m really proud of the amount of people i was able to reach in the beginning stages of my journey, especially this past year. I hit almost 20k plays on SoundCloud and over 100 listeners on major streaming platforms. I’m excited to see how far i can go with the new music i have been working on. Music, for me and many others, has its ups and downs. I’ve gotten this far by surrounding myself with like-minded creatives and showcasing my talents in any space that presents opportunity. whether it be open mics, poetry slams, or collaborating with other artists who have the same drive as me. Throughout this whole process I’ve learned, consistency is key. You can’t be afraid to put yourself out there or shy away from any opportunity that presents itself. Another major lesson I’ve learned is that art is subjective. People are going to perceive my music how they want. Not everyone will resonate with it but there’s people who will and that’s perfectly fine with me. I want the world to know that I’m real. That i do this for the art and for nothing less.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Firstly i would take everyone to JJ’s chicken and fish right by the ga state stadium to get the best chicken in the city.
After i would go to little 5 points to walk around get some drinks and thrift some cool clothes at Rago-Rama.
Then i would head to the old 4th ward skate park to catch one of the frequent paint and sits where people just have a good time to sit and relax and listen to some good music.
And lastly to end the night i would go to the open mic on Peter street to catch some good genuine vibes and hear some of Atlantas best underground artists.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly, I would like to highlight my parents for supporting me. They’ve had my back all throughout this journey. I’d also like to give N.E.L her flowers for giving me opportunities and putting me in rooms I didn’t have the courage to put myself in. My siblings, Jugg XO, Zay9ine, and Rnbphenom, are consistently supporting me and are huge sources of love and encouragement. I want to send love to my brothers I rhyme with, Almighty$ensei, Chubbz.m4a, KY’K, manny sav, and Seaven. My Creative Director Teniese Gordon AKA “Teniese the Great”. for making every concept i have into a piece of art. Incorporating me into her clothing brand “Arcane Essence” and helping me get the exposure I’m looking for.
And to my love, Bri-leshe Gaston for being my back bone and my go to support system throughout this journey. Being there for when i don’t have anything else to give. I love all y’all!
