We had the good fortune of connecting with Koray Tokdemir and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Koray, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Given the profound questions that permeate our existence—questions about the nature of reality, consciousness, and the meaning of it all—I felt compelled to pursue an artistic and creative career as a means of exploring and engaging with these fundamental inquiries. Art, for me, is not just a vocation but a quest—a journey of introspection and expression through which I seek to provoke thought, inspire dialogue, and offer glimpses into the mysteries of existence.

From a young age, I’ve been drawn to the intersection of art, philosophy, and science, captivated by the endless possibilities for exploration and discovery that lie therein. Art provides a unique language—a visual and conceptual medium through which I can delve into the complexities of the human experience and wrestle with the profound questions that define our existence.

Through my artistic practice, I aim to challenge preconceived notions, evoke emotional responses, and invite viewers to contemplate the enigmatic nature of reality. Whether through paintings, sculptures, installations, or mixed media works, each piece represents a fragment of my ongoing exploration—an attempt to capture fleeting moments of understanding amidst the vast expanse of the unknown.

Moreover, my multidisciplinary background in architecture, urban planning, and cultural management has enriched my artistic perspective, allowing me to draw upon diverse influences and insights in my creative endeavors. By integrating elements of psychogeography, theoretical physics, and neuroscience into my work, I strive to create immersive experiences that blur the boundaries between the physical and the metaphysical, inviting viewers to embark on their own journey of introspection and discovery.

In essence, I pursued an artistic and creative career not only as a means of self-expression but as a catalyst for exploration, dialogue, and transformation. Through art, I seek to transcend the constraints of language and logic, offering glimpses into the ineffable mysteries that lie at the heart of existence.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One aspect I am particularly proud of is my ability to bridge the gap between seemingly disparate fields, weaving together elements of psychogeography, theoretical physics, and neuroscience to create cohesive narratives that resonate on both intellectual and emotional levels. Whether through paintings, sculptures, installations, or mixed media works, each piece serves as a vessel for exploring the complexities of consciousness, emergence, and the elusive nature of reality.

My journey to where I am today has been anything but easy. As an interdisciplinary artist navigating different fields, I’ve faced numerous challenges—both artistic and professional. From balancing creative vision with practical constraints to overcoming logistical hurdles and financial constraints, every step of the way has been a learning experience.

However, it is precisely these challenges that have shaped me into the artist I am today. Through perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty, I have forged my own path, carving out a niche in the artistic landscape that is uniquely mine. Along the way, I’ve learned the importance of staying true to my artistic vision, remaining open to new ideas and perspectives, and cultivating a spirit of curiosity and experimentation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d recommend exploring various neighborhoodsof Istanbul, each offering its own unique character and charm. We could start by wandering through the historic streets of Sultanahmet, where iconic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque stand as testaments to the city’s rich history. From there, we could venture into the bustling markets of Eminönü, where the sights, sounds, and smells of daily life offer a vibrant glimpse into Istanbul’s bustling street culture.

Continuing our exploration, we could hop on a ferry to the Asian side of the city, where neighborhoods like Kadıköy and Moda offer a more laid-back atmosphere and a thriving arts and culinary scene. Here, we could stroll along the waterfront promenade, browse artisanal shops, and sample local delicacies at bustling food markets.

Returning to the European side, we could delve into the trendy neighborhoods of Karaköy and Galata, known for their vibrant street art, chic cafes, and hip boutiques. As we wander through narrow cobblestone streets and hidden alleyways, we’d gain insight into the creative energy that define modern urban living in Istanbul.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to ISTANBUL’74—a pioneering arts and culture platform that has played a pivotal role in forging artistic connections between Istanbul and the global cultural scene. Founded by Demet Müftüoğlu-Eşeli and filmmaker Alphan Eşeli in 2009, ISTANBUL’74 has been instrumental in showcasing the vibrant creativity and dynamic spirit of the city to the world.

Through initiatives like the ISTANBUL INTERNATIONAL ARTS & CULTURE FESTIVAL (IST. FESTIVAL), ISTANBUL’74 has brought together artists, designers, and creative minds from around the world, fostering dialogue and collaboration across disciplines. Their commitment to curating exhibitions, public installations, and cultural events has not only showcased the work of established contemporary artists but has also provided a platform for emerging talent to shine.
